HI

I have an eclipse, with a 850w psu ati 4870 and 2gb geil ddr3
problem is all the led's are on, so are the fans but i only and always get a black screen
my tech and i are baffled
is there a specific memory list to this board
any suggestions.
everything comes on except no display,
please someone help
thanks

I believe i may have found the main reason
although it is not mentioned in the eclipse datasheets i am inclined to think
that the boards limits the voltage to the ram to 1.65 max
my current memory is at 1.90 far exceeds the limits and therefore won't work at all
if someone knows any better let me know, i'll be doing a bit of search myself

Page 3-26 in the Eclipse manual talks about the 1.65v memory module recommended limit. Your CPU's Integral Memory Controller, 'may' be permanently damaged. Just an opinion, but it seems your service tech. should share some responsibility.

I think the board's ok because as i said all the led's are on (or so it appears)
as for the ram, i don't think it did much harm, because i never pushed the bios into higher voltage
my problem is that the ram "wanted" higher voltage, but because the board cannot supply that much it simply
never worked at all to begin with.
so the board never loaded because it found no ram because the ram never had enough power to boot
the ram blue led is sign that the right power is coming into the socket but that's not enough for the ram to work, ergo dead board
at least that's my reasoning, then again between "new and not sot improved electronics" and logic there may be a galaxy
Would it cost much to stick a label across the ram socket with a warning not to use ram outside a range of xyz voltage, instead of digging into page 3-26

It's not so much the RAM or the board itself as the big concern, it was the CPU IMC getting too much voltage. There is a 'peel off' label across the DIMM slots, but I forget what it 'does' say. At any rate, I hope you get it working. :-))

perhaps you can explain
how would the cpu get too much voltage if i did not modify the bios
the way i think i see it - is the board is running at basic, meaning it was supplying the nominal voltage to ALL
components, and unless i somehow voluntarily change those values (which i did not) to affect the whole board and the components
on board then the whole thing should be at some kind of "wait" status waiting for the ram to come on board
i think, only adding corrected ram will be the answer.
all in all this was an extremely smart and elevated conversation, I learned something for which i am very grateful.
if i get it right, first i need to add the correct voltage ram and then if nothing happens i believe it will be rma time (i hope hope not)
i am being dumb in believing that all those led's and the rest of the board behaving properly mean something, then again
we say - hope springs eternal (alexander pope)

I think mine had a sticker over the ram slots as well.  I saved every thing so I'll dig out the box to see if it is a voltage warning or some thing like that.  Hope you get it working.

I guess I just said it wrong. Only trying to point out a concern about your processor. If no additional voltage was applied to it in the bios, then no damage to it was done.

Patriot "Viper" DDR3 Memory! -8GB (8192mb)-  4 x 2048MB (4 x 2GB) - 1600MHz - (7 - 7 - 7 - 20)  1.9v - PVS34G1600LLK

Oh didn't see the 1.9V ! There isn't these kind of module in shops anymore... or produced normally.
As HU16E pointed out that is really dangerous, and it's even past JEDEC operating absolute max voltage ! Please do not use them.

Why your tech won't just change your board ? Is the tech the neighbor next door ? Does he comes with a hammer to plug the RAM ?

"new and not sot improved electronics and logic there may be a galaxy "

new improved marketing ?

well the soup got denser
i just went ito g skill site, looked up the memory specs and according to them these are 1.5V units
however they do not mention as being X58 chips compatible, they show them as going to X48 only
i am writing to them to find out what gives
i did a bit of search in other ddr3 and guess what there are other memories that are clearly indicated that they work with the Eclipse
Not this one though - not at all
i guess it's a ddr3 but mostly generic ddr3, whereas our Eclipse dearest is more finicky
i wound up buying something on ebay but this time i bought something marked on the Eclipse booklet as supposedly acceptable (item code letter for letter)

I was going to say that (but I noticed your last post)... soon as I saw 1.9 volts I thought "sounds like that DDR3 RAM is not compatible with a X58 based system". DDR3 has been around for a while and I haven't heard of any that need to run at those voltages that are specified for i7's. Another give away is the fact that the "kits" you mention are obviously designed for for a dual-channel setup, not tri-channel. A tri-channel kit will come with three or six sticks, not two or four!

After making sure that i was getting the right memory, i wound up buying 2 kits of 2 1gb each memory bars
I have seen some sold in multiples of 3 but most are 2's
also as someone said earlier even inserting just ONE bar ought to make the pc functional
time will  tell

I think you missed something in my post... i7 supports tri-channel, ergo, i7 kits will always be sold as 3GB, 6GB or 12GB comprising of 3 or 6 individual sticks of RAM. Any kit you find out there coming in pairs is not designed or intended for the i7/X58 range. Personally, I'd feel a lot safer buying a kit that is designated X58/i7 compatible by the manufacturer/OEM. I don't know how much you paid for the RAM on eBay (and I assume saved over buying your ram from a retailer/e-tailer) but just because it's DDR3, doesn't necessarily equate to a happy marriage with X58 even if the seller says so - Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware) is a good motto to work by. Check the manufacturer's site and ensure you're buying what you believe to be getting - X58 compatibility.

Also, it is true that you can run a single stick of RAM which is very handy for eliminating/isolating boot problems with your rig. Heck, you can run any number that your mother board will support - our case up to six sticks. I'm just trying to point that dual channel kits may be designed for pre-X58 series boards, say the X48 series (plus some X45 series boards) and like the Patriot sticks you mentioned earlier, could be designed run off a voltage higher than the 1.65V maximum that Intel has specified for the i7. Corsair has some DDR3-1066 dual-channel kits that are designed to run at 1.6v whereas their i7 specific sets (DDR3-1333) run off 1.5V. They have some faster DDR3 dual-channel sets that are designed to run at 1.8V which again, exceeds the maximum rating for the i7.

Reply #19 pretty well gave him a hint on what to look for. According to exlaval's Reply #29, the mem. sticks now on order, are listed as 'compatible' in the Eclipse manual. With the right population rules for 4 sticks, it should run triple channel just fine. Use DIMM slots A1, A0, B0, & C0.

Hopefully, he hasn't just gone:
  • DDR3 - tick
  • OEM - tick
  • 1066 - tick
and ignored the remainder.

As I stated before, I've yet to see an i7 memory kit offered with two sticks of RAM instead of three (or 4 / 6 as the case may be).

this is the designated memory i bought

Kingston 2GB 1333MHz DDR3 Memory KVR1333D3N9/2G - times 2

and according to this link

http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/partsinfo.asp?root=us&LinkBack=&ktcpartno=KVR1333D3N9/2G&id=2

there is a list of compatible boards in a small link inside the page and it definitely shows the MSI Eclipse as being one of them

also that memory is sold in pairs

hopefully i'll be getting for bars which again hopefully will get me out of anguish

i am aware that this memory may not be as fresh as the Eclipse but the specs mentions that it does work with X58 chips, and not only X48 like the one i have mounted now

thanks guys much appreciated

just an update,

i bought this ram:  OCZ PLATINUM 6GB 3x2GB DDR3 1866 PC3-15000

at the shop i only had a glimpse of the bios first page with the MSI logo, had to run

i guess the board lives, tomorrow will tell
