Hi all,
i recently bought an external display (a 144hz one), and i thought it would work well. Unfortunately, when i plugged it into the HDMI port of my MSI GL63 8RC, i find out that the HDMI port is taken in charge by the intel graphics and not the NVIDIA one, so i can't have 144hz (120 only) neither nvidia G sync and so on. Do you know if there is a solution to have the NVIDIA graphics card by default or is it impossible? I have another hope : does the mini-displayPort is connected on the intel graphics aswell or do i have a chance by using it instead of the HDMI port? I can't find the port on nvidia PhysX to know it.

Thank you in advance!

According to the specifications for your computer  https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GL63-8RC/Specification

GeForce? GTX 1050 with 4 / 2 GB GDDR5

HDMI  1x (4K @ 30Hz)   - there is an option for the HD screen, but only 120 Hz

Type-C USB3.1 Gen1
1x Mini-DisplayPort
Expand the vision for extreme gaming experience. MSI innovative Matrix Display supports up to 2 external displays simultaneously through 1x HDMI port* and 1x Mini DisplayPort 1.2. Multi-task is made possible even during competitive gameplays. Connect the laptop to HDTV display, Matrix Display supports 4K output with a resolution up to 3840 x 2160. MSI Matrix Display technology creates an ideal environment for extreme gaming experience and pleasant multimedia entertainment.

So the mini DP which is 1.2 supports 4K output, according to the specifications.

And do you think that by doing so with the displayPort i will unlock the "display" tab on the Nvidia Panel to be able to activate G Sync? Because i was told that to have it unlocked, i need to have a direct link between the Nvidia GPU and the port, and i can't be sure that the displayPort is connected like that and not the HDMI one. And the cable is 25?, i don't want to spend it for a thing that won't work :/

u need 1060 or above gpu to have display ports connected directly to nvidia

1050 gpu they run through the optimus

you loose 15% FPS anytime you go through optimus

display port 1.2 does more bandwidth then hdmi 1.4 or even hdmi 2.0B

most monitors that have gsync or freesync only allow it to work through the display port on the monitor. it wont work through the hdmi ports on the monitor. that is how they make them.

Are you sure about it? i read in other places that the GPU needed to have the possibility to have it was above 8xx GPU. Moreover, there are displayPorts natively on GTX 1050 GPUs aswell, so i can't see why i would need a 1060 or higher.
For the adaptative sync part, actually G-Sync work through DP and FreeSync through both DP and HDMI, I kow it, so this is not the problem. The problem is about the direct connection between the DP and the GPU, cause if there isn't any direct link, GSync don't work even on DP. You answered it, it seems, but i don't understand why it is for 1060+ only if there are native DPs on 1050 GPU as well

all i know is if you have 1060 or above your external display ports will have a direct connection to the nvidia gpu bypassing optimus and giving 15% more FPS

1050 gpu external display ports will run through optimus

i dont know if that means your variable refresh wont work or not,

also check in your monitor menu with monitor buttons

I don't use either 1050 or 1060, so can't comment on that but what RaiderGamer said sounds right.
I forgot to add that many DP cables are older, up to DP 1.3.  DP 1.4 cables are more expensive but needed for the bandwidth if you want 4K video.

msi laptops seem to only come with mdp 1.2, which does a bit more bandwidth then hdmi 2.0B

mdp 1.2 can do 4K 60HZ 10bit full-RGB
