The much discussed issue with fans of GTX 970 GAMING 4G randomly starting to run in idle (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=184333.50) seems to be fixed with a vbios update. To point this out: These are official MSI files and no vbios mods

A very big thanks goes out to the German MSI forum and their moderator wiesel201 who pointed me to >>his thread<< and the files on the German forum.

To get started you first need to identify the correct vbios for your card. Therefor you need to check the card's S/N.

Example of a GTX 970 GAMING 4G's S/N: 602-V316-03SB1409025XXX

The number code marked red representing the card's batch is relevant for identifying the correct vbios. The table below shows which vbios applies to which batch number.

If you are unsure which one to use always ask one of the moderators or admins instead of hoping for the best!

09S / 03S / 010 NV316MH.182 -> to download NV316MH_182.rar

10S / 04S / 020 NV316MH.191 -> to download NV316MH_191.rar

11S / 05S / 030 NV316MH.1A1 -> to download NV316MH_1A1.rar

For our example card with the S/N 602-V316-03SB1409025XXX NV316MH.182 is the correct vbios so NV316MH_182.rar needs to be downloaded.

After downloading the matching archive first uninstall the Nvidia driver (!) then simply decompress the archive and then execute the included batch file (182.bat in case of NV316MH.182's archive) in Windows by double clicking or via command prompt (must be run as administrator)

Same like above now also applies to the GTX980 Gaming series:

03s / 13s  NV317MH.112 -> to download NV317MH_112.rar
06s / 14s  NV317MH.131 -> to download NV317MH_131.rar
11s / 15s  NV317MH.143 -> to download NV317MH_143.rar
12s / 16s  NV317MH.153 -> to download NV317MH_153.rar

Thanks again wiesel201!

*Please note that this just covers the issue with the fans randomly starting and not the problem of one fan not starting at all on earlier cards which is a defect that requires rma.*

can i flash it to on my gtx970 Gaming 4G

sn: 602 - V316 - 18SB1502005568

last 2-3 days seems the newest nvidia drivers crashes randomly.

perhaps post the right link to the right vbios? .. pls help me! :)

This vbios is only to fix random fans issue. Graphics driver crashing is sadly driver being the issue.

thomasgo.unterwegs, for your own issue open an own topic. This thread is not for general troubleshooting but the "Fans Randomly Turning On issue" only.

Hello I also have a MSI 970, suddenly when just browsing or PC in idle my fans ramp up very loud for sometimes 10 or 20 seconds than back to normal. I think its because it hits 60? ? I don't know but its annoying...

My S/N : 602 - V316 - 130B1505054102 , I am unsure what bios to take or how to fix...

Current bios according to live update : NV316MH.186

NV316MH.186 is the latest vbios for your card and not affected by the Fans Randomly Turning On issue this thread is about. Open an own topic for your issue and there add the temp the fans do speed up.

Hello, Ive got a new MSI GTX970 Gaming 4G and I was curious if I need a bios update or if I have the newest already. Nvidia Inspectors says Bios is: 84.04.36.00.F1

Thanks!

For just a vbios update please open an own thread and there add the S/N and current vbios saved to file. The numbers provided are useless and no real vbios version.

I received my new GTX 980 2 days ago and everything was fine. Now today some problems started at first I only noticed that windows is kinda "laggy" when moving windows and random actions. Then I played some games and I had really crappy frame rates like 20-30fps in Dota2, Diablo3 etc. At least in D3 there are some spikes to 60 fps...

I searched and searched and then I noticed that during gaming only one Fan seems to spin. The one farther from the slot spins and the one in front (nearer to the connectors) does not spin. And thats how I ended up in this thread. Now I checked the SN of my card and its not listed.

Do I have a different problem or...?

SN is 602 - V317 - 180B....

Your problem has nothing to do with this thread's random fan starting problem. One of your fans does not work what might be indicating a bad fan. Open an own thread for checking.

hi i have the version 130B on the s/n is this normal when the tempretature is below 60 the dual fans stop when im playing it goes to 60+ both fans are spinning thanks

This is totally not related to the issue of this topic. Next time open an own topic.

Stopping the fans below 60?C is the Zero Frozr key feature of this card... So yes it's normal.

I just got a GTX980 gaming 4G. And have a problem with one fan, the card is like 40? but one fans keep turning on spinning slowly though and nothing in no software reports it spinning.

I have checked S/N and doesnt need a bios update...

Most of the time it is also the only fan spinning while playing some games but I guess thats normal but the fan turning on in idle while the GPU is 41? is not normal...

What should I do ?
