The much discussed issue with fans of GTX 970 GAMING 4G randomly starting to run in idle (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=184333.50) seems to be fixed with a vbios update. To point this out: These are official MSI files and no vbios mods

A very big thanks goes out to the German MSI forum and their moderator wiesel201 who pointed me to >>his thread<< and the files on the German forum.

To get started you first need to identify the correct vbios for your card. Therefor you need to check the card's S/N.

Example of a GTX 970 GAMING 4G's S/N: 602-V316-03SB1409025XXX

The number code marked red representing the card's batch is relevant for identifying the correct vbios. The table below shows which vbios applies to which batch number.

If you are unsure which one to use always ask one of the moderators or admins instead of hoping for the best!

09S / 03S / 010 NV316MH.182 -> to download NV316MH_182.rar

10S / 04S / 020 NV316MH.191 -> to download NV316MH_191.rar

11S / 05S / 030 NV316MH.1A1 -> to download NV316MH_1A1.rar

For our example card with the S/N 602-V316-03SB1409025XXX NV316MH.182 is the correct vbios so NV316MH_182.rar needs to be downloaded.

After downloading the matching archive first uninstall the Nvidia driver (!) then simply decompress the archive and then execute the included batch file (182.bat in case of NV316MH.182's archive) in Windows by double clicking or via command prompt (must be run as administrator)

Same like above now also applies to the GTX980 Gaming series:

03s / 13s  NV317MH.112 -> to download NV317MH_112.rar
06s / 14s  NV317MH.131 -> to download NV317MH_131.rar
11s / 15s  NV317MH.143 -> to download NV317MH_143.rar
12s / 16s  NV317MH.153 -> to download NV317MH_153.rar

Thanks again wiesel201!

*Please note that this just covers the issue with the fans randomly starting and not the problem of one fan not starting at all on earlier cards which is a defect that requires rma.*

Hello everyone,
Does this VBIOS applies to my msi GL72 6QF laptop ? Fans are quite noisy.. My bios and firmware are fully updated and i just installed my new ram HyperX impact 16 GB 2133mhz. My ram must overclock itself but it runs a liitle bit slower, like 2128 mhz, So each module runs at 1064,4 mhz or close. What are the best vbios settings for my laptop ? Could you guys help me out to get the max out of my machine for gaming? I'd really appreciate that ! If anny other modifications must be done, i'd be happy to here them from experts in tuning your rig.
My laptop specs are : http://www.materiel.net/ordinateur-portable/msi-gl72-6qf-856fr-136035.html

Thank you !

Yet another user..
Read the title. This applies ONLY to desktop graphics cards. And only to GTX970/980.

I have had my gtx970 since 2014 and it just started doing the "spin up every 30 seconds while idle" a few days ago, this fix still applies?

Pulled serial from cpu-z:
G606T22H05HL

Thank you :)

What GTX 970? Add S/N and a copy of the current vbios (not some number columns that are no real vbios version)

MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING - 4GB GDDR5
S/N 602-v316-09sb1411001219

the file is GM204.rom but I had to rename it to jpg to be able to upload it.

I have a 980 4G since march 2015. The airflow in case is fairly restricted, however card was constantly staying at reasonable 43 degrees at idle and reaching 76 on max load. Recently (2 weeks ago) I was cleaning PC, disassembled PC, assembled everything back again with no changes whatsoever (no hardware/software changes). After that, for some reason, card started to go above 43. On first startup after reassembling it reached 50 while idling, then fan turned on, brought it back to 40 and since then the card is always fluctuating between 40 and 45. Reaches 45, active frozr turns on one fan to 30%, cools down to 40, turns off and then during 10-15 minutes it goes up again to 45, and so on. Max temperature on load is completely the same as before(!). Any ideas on why has the idle temp risen and fan profile is so weird?

Edit: I have considered flashing bios, but now completely lost because of my S/N
S/N: 602-V317-100B1412088095
BIOS: NV317MH.113

Your post has obviously nothing at all to do with the topic "Fix for GTX970/980 Fans Randomly Turning On issue". This isn't a vbios update thread nor is it about gpu temps after reassembling. The temps are fine anyway. If you want to discuss anything about your card or you need help open an own thread.
