The much discussed issue with fans of GTX 970 GAMING 4G randomly starting to run in idle (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=184333.50) seems to be fixed with a vbios update. To point this out: These are official MSI files and no vbios mods

A very big thanks goes out to the German MSI forum and their moderator wiesel201 who pointed me to >>his thread<< and the files on the German forum.

To get started you first need to identify the correct vbios for your card. Therefor you need to check the card's S/N.

Example of a GTX 970 GAMING 4G's S/N: 602-V316-03SB1409025XXX

The number code marked red representing the card's batch is relevant for identifying the correct vbios. The table below shows which vbios applies to which batch number.

If you are unsure which one to use always ask one of the moderators or admins instead of hoping for the best!

09S / 03S / 010 NV316MH.182 -> to download NV316MH_182.rar

10S / 04S / 020 NV316MH.191 -> to download NV316MH_191.rar

11S / 05S / 030 NV316MH.1A1 -> to download NV316MH_1A1.rar

For our example card with the S/N 602-V316-03SB1409025XXX NV316MH.182 is the correct vbios so NV316MH_182.rar needs to be downloaded.

After downloading the matching archive first uninstall the Nvidia driver (!) then simply decompress the archive and then execute the included batch file (182.bat in case of NV316MH.182's archive) in Windows by double clicking or via command prompt (must be run as administrator)

Same like above now also applies to the GTX980 Gaming series:

03s / 13s  NV317MH.112 -> to download NV317MH_112.rar
06s / 14s  NV317MH.131 -> to download NV317MH_131.rar
11s / 15s  NV317MH.143 -> to download NV317MH_143.rar
12s / 16s  NV317MH.153 -> to download NV317MH_153.rar

Thanks again wiesel201!

*Please note that this just covers the issue with the fans randomly starting and not the problem of one fan not starting at all on earlier cards which is a defect that requires rma.*

Just for anyone reading this thread and wondering where the links are, you need to log into the forum to see them. I thought I was going blind this morning as I couldn't see a download link. :bonk:

Every time i try to flash the fix on my GTX980 my screen freezes and i have to manually shut off my computer. Wth!
That sounds like you didn't uninstall or disable the card in device manager before trying to flash it .

You can't flash 9xx cards with drivers loaded , same with extracting bios with GPU-Z but the latest version disables driver auto before extracting it .

Hi!

I've been keeping an eye on this forum for a while since I've been experience some issues with my 970 but only now I registered so I could ask about a few things.

According to MSI Live Update 6 my current VGA BIOS is called MH-V316 version NV316MH.126 and my S/N is 03S so, should I download NV316MH.182 eitherways, despite Live Update showing my current version as .126?

Just one more question... when you mention to unninstall Nvidia drivers, should I just go to Control Panel and delete everything that is related to Nvidia or should I just unninstall Nvidia Experience or what?

Thank you in advance and accept my apologies for having to deal with folk like me who understand nothing about what they're doing :)

I had the same Card designator as you and same bios. I downloaded NV316MH.182 and extracted to a new folder on my desktop. I went into Programs and features in the control panel and uninstalled the Nvidia driver only. Did not reboot when prompted. I ran the 182.bat from the extracted folder (right click on 182.bat and run as admin). pressed Y when asked. When it's finished the cmd box will close.

Rebooted PC and installed 344.48 drivers only, rebooted. Even though Liveupdate still shows bios version 126, the fan start/stop at idle is fixed.

You only need to remove the display driver itself, you can leave everything else.

Alternatively you can go to Device Manager and temporarily disable the device (your video board).  If you aren't comfortable with that sort of thing then just uninstall/flash/reinstall.

Greetings. In my case i have two gtx 970 gaming in SLI. Is the procedure for flashing the cards the same? Can i Select witch card to flash then?
Or do i have to remove one card and update one at a time? (god nooooo.... :crying:)

U did wrong uninstalling the driver.

Use DDU in safe mode to uninstall the nvidia drivers.

Thanks for the replies both of you. I've done as you said and disabled the GPU via the Device Manager but when I choose to run the bat file as admin the cmd box opens and closes in a second. I assume something is not right since it didn't even asked me to press the "Y" key. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

mine starts with 03sb to so i assume 182 its the one i should use right?
Other thing is as i use ddu from nvidias forum, is it still ok to use it to remove drivers before flashing the bios?
I was about to download the new drivers as i saw .65 came out and i usually remove all with ddu before installing new version, so its a good time to flash the card at the same time.
While looking for s/n i opened the case and the fans indeed stop and start every few seconds as people mention both here and on nv forums.
Otherwise couldnt see it as i didnt watched the fan monitor in afterburner for a longer time so  :shocked_anim:
Btw as i write about AB i would need to disable/uninstall the afterburner too before flashing i guess? usually close it when installing drivers.
Sorry for the questions, never before was i forced to flash gpu bios so little scared aboout it  :shocked:

I uninstalled the driver in safe mode using DDU. Then booted normally, then disabled all software, including AB. Leaved all vanilla. Then clicked on the .bat file. With admin rights at firsrt. But doesnt work to right click and select "run as administrator", u need to just double click on it, and it will show a message and click ok.

Then the flashing procedure begins. Will prompt u to press y several times. Then the CMD window will close automatically. And u reboot the PC, then u install the drivers.

And ur good 2 go ! :emot-tip-wink:

No need to disable device, I didn't. No need to uninstall drivers in safe mode, I didn't. The instructions in the first post don't mention doing either of those. Follow the instruction in my post above if you want because it worked for me.

Alright I'll give it a try. Also, why did you installed the 344.48 instead of the recent 344.65 drivers? Does the old driver have better performance for you?

I didn't have .65 downloaded at the time plus it's a game ready driver for the new games out which I don't own.

Got it, worked as it was supposed to and Live Update is showing version 182. Thank you for your help!

Glad you got it. After scanning in the system info tab mine also shows 182 now.

For those flashing sli, its very straight forward.  NVflash will simply flash one card, then tell you it has found another and just repeat without exiting NVflash.  Once it has no further cards to flash it will tell you.  There is no need to be uninstalling cards etc.

Hope that helps.
