The much discussed issue with fans of GTX 970 GAMING 4G randomly starting to run in idle (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=184333.50) seems to be fixed with a vbios update. To point this out: These are official MSI files and no vbios mods

A very big thanks goes out to the German MSI forum and their moderator wiesel201 who pointed me to >>his thread<< and the files on the German forum.

To get started you first need to identify the correct vbios for your card. Therefor you need to check the card's S/N.

Example of a GTX 970 GAMING 4G's S/N: 602-V316-03SB1409025XXX

The number code marked red representing the card's batch is relevant for identifying the correct vbios. The table below shows which vbios applies to which batch number.

If you are unsure which one to use always ask one of the moderators or admins instead of hoping for the best!

09S / 03S / 010 NV316MH.182 -> to download NV316MH_182.rar

10S / 04S / 020 NV316MH.191 -> to download NV316MH_191.rar

11S / 05S / 030 NV316MH.1A1 -> to download NV316MH_1A1.rar

For our example card with the S/N 602-V316-03SB1409025XXX NV316MH.182 is the correct vbios so NV316MH_182.rar needs to be downloaded.

After downloading the matching archive first uninstall the Nvidia driver (!) then simply decompress the archive and then execute the included batch file (182.bat in case of NV316MH.182's archive) in Windows by double clicking or via command prompt (must be run as administrator)

Same like above now also applies to the GTX980 Gaming series:

03s / 13s  NV317MH.112 -> to download NV317MH_112.rar
06s / 14s  NV317MH.131 -> to download NV317MH_131.rar
11s / 15s  NV317MH.143 -> to download NV317MH_143.rar
12s / 16s  NV317MH.153 -> to download NV317MH_153.rar

Thanks again wiesel201!

*Please note that this just covers the issue with the fans randomly starting and not the problem of one fan not starting at all on earlier cards which is a defect that requires rma.*

Yes, I said it worked. But only for sometime. The problem happened while playing. I have MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G, yes, I installed the correct vBios and MSI Live update shows also updated vBios number. Here is the picture: http://gyazo.com/6d185a9ac3992f53863ed09bd74da7ae

Try updated vbios version NV316MH.184 -> https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=251510.msg1445813#msg1445813

Won't work. If I uninstalled this driver over here http://gyazo.com/f40c0e4b7cc5e250b4d64fa2b2a7f17e then the fan was ok. And if I installed it back, then it was stuck again.Second fan at 100%

So, I'm back, installing the older driver didn't work. So I helped this 1st fan a bit and to be sure, it worked. How long will it work, I don't know :p

I have an issue

GTX 980 MSI Gamming in SLI

Updated via live update to the new 113 bios which fixes window 8.1 hybrid

Mobo Asus maximus VII

So i verified through GPUZ my video cards have the latest update

Primary video card the red fan does not spin at at all until i hit around 60c "dont know exact temp"

The black VRM fan is constantly spinning and when i use MSI fan control it defaults to my second video card which always reads 0% on red and black fans.  Now i check my case and my black vrm fan is always running even though i am sitting at 42 c idle. Is it because i have two monitors plugged in and set to SLI?
I am on the latest drivers for nvidia and my motherboard asus

what gives?  I do not get it
please help

MSI support on the phone is useless

It is intended that the gpu fan will not run below around 65?C. VRM fan depends on the VRM temp not gpu temp. If VRMs do require cooling as getting hot the fan will spin. Check their temps with Afterburner.

That means the 09S / 03S / 010  are the first versions of the msi gtx 970? so for the logic the 11S / 05S / 030 version are the last graphics made?

Cheers,

Pretty much but might not be exact.

So I'm back here. Fan issue is not gone, started again.
After uninstalling Nvidia drivers the fan issue will be gone, I'm absolutely confused, is it my card(the worst thing) or is it nvidia?
And I'm also pretty dissapointed because of it..

Yes, I know I have been told, but I want to find solution however, I don't give up so easily. If this fan issue happens again, I will try to reconnect fans cable, I've read somewhere, it was helping.
But now, my cards temperature goes up to 58 - 60 like if I don't do anything, so the fans sometimes starts and stops, MSI Afterburner temperature line is rippling.
Yes, I know it must to be go on if temperature goes up to 60 degrees but are there any solutions to keep temperature down to 50 degrees? Excepted for raising fan speed.

The cooler is not meant to have the fan running at all below 65?C. As it should run passive it is of course just barely below that temp even in idle. If you want the fans to run always create an Afterburner profile.
