Fix for GTX970/980 Fans Randomly Turning On issue

The much discussed issue with fans of GTX 970 GAMING 4G randomly starting to run in idle (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=184333.50) seems to be fixed with a vbios update. To point this out: These are official MSI files and no vbios mods

A very big thanks goes out to the German MSI forum and their moderator wiesel201 who pointed me to >>his thread<< and the files on the German forum.

To get started you first need to identify the correct vbios for your card. Therefor you need to check the card's S/N.

Example of a GTX 970 GAMING 4G's S/N: 602-V316-03SB1409025XXX

The number code marked red representing the card's batch is relevant for identifying the correct vbios. The table below shows which vbios applies to which batch number.

If you are unsure which one to use always ask one of the moderators or admins instead of hoping for the best!

09S / 03S / 010 NV316MH.182 -> to download NV316MH_182.rar

10S / 04S / 020 NV316MH.191 -> to download NV316MH_191.rar

11S / 05S / 030 NV316MH.1A1 -> to download NV316MH_1A1.rar

For our example card with the S/N 602-V316-03SB1409025XXX NV316MH.182 is the correct vbios so NV316MH_182.rar needs to be downloaded.

After downloading the matching archive first uninstall the Nvidia driver (!) then simply decompress the archive and then execute the included batch file (182.bat in case of NV316MH.182's archive) in Windows by double clicking or via command prompt (must be run as administrator)

Hi, I had the fan issue on my brand new MSI GTX 970 4G and found the first thread (with a lot of pages)

In the end, I updated the Afterburner app (First I wasn't be able to set manually the fan's RPM after update, It's OK)
Then updated the Vbios using "MSI Live Update" App. version needed detection & download is automatic.

Since, I didn't had any problem yet ...

I tried to answer on the first thread to tell you that but seems to be locked so I use this one

Hey
Now is above NV316MH_182 bios!
68C card, I sometimes black frame fan will not start!
Other hand, if I push it starts,and stops if the test is stopped
I put up NV316MH.184 ? Improve what?
MSI Live Update will be?

Can some one hellp me , i updated my 2x msi gtx980 gamin to the lates bios, the random fan problem is gone . But when i start a game or somethnig that loads the video card  the first gtx980 in slot , the black fan ramps up to 100% . when i slap the places of the 2 cards again the first one in slot do the same black fan goes to 100%. Thats happening evan when the tamps of the card are under 50c it takes a 30sec-to 1min in game to ram up to 100% . that happens in all my games evan Leage of legends.... and there is no change if a play on Ultra or Low setthing and AA on or of dont make a difrence.... my  Monitor is Acer 1080p. Tryed all posible setthing in Nvidia control panel but again no difrence... My mobo is Asus maximus VII hero if that have to do something?? whan i play i use the msi game app to put the black fans at minimal 30% and when i play like that the tems dont go over 53c withaut the app with black fan at maxx they stay oround 47c . Pls some one hellp me lates bios from msi live update is NV317MH.113 . sorry for bad english and messy tiping im realy gething mad i got the 2 cards at the end of septhember and till now nothing have changed the same loud @$%$....

So I kind of did something stupid. Hopefully nothing too serious happened.

-install NV316MH_191.rar
-uninstall drivers
-execute nvflash.exe NOT 191.batch
-I find out I was supposed to use NV316MH_182.rar
-execute 181.batch
-restart windows
-black/gray display, nothing will pop up
-I'm sweating bullets by this point
-turned it on again and it's fine now.
-installed drivers again

Did I mess up anything serious? Anyway to fix it?

Update to latest version NV316MH.186 that is attached. Flash it like described in the initial post. It comes with the same batch setup (186.bat).

:think: You were not good??? What should that mean? Anyway, the vbios is the same but the dropbox link does not include a .bat file for automated flashing.

none of the fans started up while the card was around 90celsius my card might have the hardware issue with the fans!
