The much discussed issue with fans of GTX 970 GAMING 4G randomly starting to run in idle (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=184333.50) seems to be fixed with a vbios update. To point this out: These are official MSI files and no vbios mods

A very big thanks goes out to the German MSI forum and their moderator wiesel201 who pointed me to >>his thread<< and the files on the German forum.

To get started you first need to identify the correct vbios for your card. Therefor you need to check the card's S/N.

Example of a GTX 970 GAMING 4G's S/N: 602-V316-03SB1409025XXX

The number code marked red representing the card's batch is relevant for identifying the correct vbios. The table below shows which vbios applies to which batch number.

If you are unsure which one to use always ask one of the moderators or admins instead of hoping for the best!

09S / 03S / 010 NV316MH.182 -> to download NV316MH_182.rar

10S / 04S / 020 NV316MH.191 -> to download NV316MH_191.rar

11S / 05S / 030 NV316MH.1A1 -> to download NV316MH_1A1.rar

For our example card with the S/N 602-V316-03SB1409025XXX NV316MH.182 is the correct vbios so NV316MH_182.rar needs to be downloaded.

After downloading the matching archive first uninstall the Nvidia driver (!) then simply decompress the archive and then execute the included batch file (182.bat in case of NV316MH.182's archive) in Windows by double clicking or via command prompt (must be run as administrator)

Same like above now also applies to the GTX980 Gaming series:

03s / 13s  NV317MH.112 -> to download NV317MH_112.rar
06s / 14s  NV317MH.131 -> to download NV317MH_131.rar
11s / 15s  NV317MH.143 -> to download NV317MH_143.rar
12s / 16s  NV317MH.153 -> to download NV317MH_153.rar

Thanks again wiesel201!

*Please note that this just covers the issue with the fans randomly starting and not the problem of one fan not starting at all on earlier cards which is a defect that requires rma.*

:rolleyes: It's the one fan not working issue that can't be solved by vbios as clearly stated in the initial post...

Hello, I have S/N 602-V316-090B14xxxxxxxx which vBios should I download ?

Also would the fixed Bios be UEFI GOP compatible (Just to make sure with Hybrid Bios)  ?

*970 Golden Edition, 2nd Fan 100%, current Bios 84.04.31.00.F9 / NV316MH.1F3

Many Thanks!

There is no vbios for any GTX970/980 that is not UEFI GOP compatible as Nvidia doesn't mean legacy vbios version still be used for Maxwell generation.

Note that if fan stays at 100% but the other does barely move it is defective and can't be fixed by a vbios.

Of course just for the certain batch of Golden Edition. If looking for a correct version provide S/N and a copy of the current vbios like anyone else.

Update to latest version NV316MH.186 that is attached. Flash it like described in the initial post. It comes with the same batch setup (186.bat).

Hi,

Sorry but this thread ( forum ?) is a mess.
There are 2 criticals infos here and i had to dig to found out that i need to update my bios.
I was about to flash with bios 182 from the 1st page when i stoped and went to the 4th page where i found that there is a 186 bios for my card.CMON !

so please :

1/ update the first page with the latest release of bioses.

2/ Make this thread sticky ok sorry for this one, looks like i was looking in "GAMING" graphic card section ... why 2 splitted sections ? AFAIK gtx 970/980 are gaming cards ...

We all spent around 400 bucks to found out we have to monitor fans to check if it spins ( ! ) and tolerate coil whine.
What about MSI doing his job first ?

The subject of this thread was to fix the fan issue what .182 does not provide the latest vbios. If it is provided later in the thread that's an extra. Normally vbios versions need to be requested in an own thread.

As MSI about it: >>How to contact MSI.<<

It's rather suggested to restart before flashing. Before it restarts, driver sets up some command that tells processes and files that are currently working to not work and remove themself while booting up.
But if you don't want to, don't do it.

Of course one should restart but it just struck me that there was no mention of it here.

My 970 is currently running on 184 and seems like there can be no harm done by refreshing the bios.

You should NOT restart after uninstalling driver else I would have mentioned it. If restarting without completely uninstalling (only possible in safe mode) driver will reinstall.

My fault there  :bonk:

Hello, I have recently upgraded my GPUs from Gaming 760's to SLI Gaming 970's. I must say that these are some of the best performing GPUs I have ever owned. They perform flawlessly and are extremely powerful. Now to the matter that brings me to post. I bought the first Gaming 970 in December for a Christmas present to myself, I loved it so much I figured 2 would be twice as good, right? SO I bought a second one a few weeks ago, and well 2 is better than one! The cards appear to be running different VBIOS versions and I was going to flash them to the latest version since I have a long weekend. Here are the 2 VBIOS versions that I currently have. 84.04.28.00.F1 and 84.04.31.00.F1

Are there any special precautions to take when flashing VBIOS running SLI GPUs? I understand that SLI will be disabled after removing Nvidia drivers with DDU. Will there be an option to specify which card to flash to?
