M-FLASH will not see an update file with a non-matching filename. Everything before the dot, and first character after, have to match with your installed BIOS.
And no, renaming the file will not work, it will see the file then, but it still won't update.

Most likely your board is from a pre-built system that gets its own seperate BIOS updates, and you cannot use the normal BIOS updates for the retail board. For the boards on those pre-built systems, they sometimes use a custom BIOS which might be modified to leave out certain options (for example, to prevent any overclocking that could mess with their cooling concept, which is probably tailor-made for that system).

If you want the official BIOS updates because they are way ahead than the ones for your pre-built PC (if the company that built the PC even offer them), then your only chance is to flash the official MSI BIOS using the flash tool from this thread, at your own risk of course. You should make sure that some key CPU- and cooling-related settings will be set roughly similar afterwards though, or at least take into consideration the previous settings, as they might be adjusted to your system's cooling capabilities.

Then probably it's not safe there for some reason. Did you check with the vendor who offered this pre-built PC, if they provide any BIOS updates?

Hmm yeah, cheap used boards which are taken from pre-built systems, without informing the buyers about the problems that this can cause with the BIOS updates...

I install the x470 gaming plus AL bios and now have a very hard soft brick. My video card is r9 380, I think so old the switch on it is go faster not uefi/mbr, in any case I have black screen and despite trying many things I cannot access bios to turn secure boot off. I believe the video card is why.

Can I remove the pcie video card and hope that 1.27 blind will downgrade the bios to a bios that defaults to secure mode off so I can reset cmos and get my puter back and not a hard brick? Oh I'm gunna try anyway seems like it's pretty idiot proof, but I'm proof myself 😝

From which BIOS you have flashed and how? Can you list full system specs. too, see >>Posting Guide<<

UEFI Shell Flash tool [V1.30]
Is this tool designed as a clean bios upgrade tool (so I don't brick my Z490).
or is it a general tool for bios updates...(and doesn't address the bricking epidemic).
Also, will the latest bios still kill my board, or are we past that ? Thanks.

I don't know what clean bios upgrade means, but it should not brick your Z490 board.

I don't know what bricked your board in the past,
I guess you flashed before with M-Flash or LiveUpdate and this bricked your board?

I can't comment other flashing methods why they bricked your board if you mean this.

or is it a general tool for bios updates...(and doesn't address the bricking epidemic).
It's for general, but has special support for Z490 series.

(and doesn't address the bricking epidemic).
It don't address such issues as other flashing ways are completely not related to the tool.

Also, will the latest bios still kill my board,
If you flash with tool to the latest BIOS version it should not brick your board, so far never did.
However any BIOS flashing is risky by nature and flashing BIOS accidents can happens due one or another reason,
means BIOS flashing is always at own risk.

Hundreds of Z490 boards were bricked, not by user error (standard bios update methods), but by an undiagnosed flaw in the board's hardware or coding software.
I just want to know if it is still ongoing, or if your tool and upgrade path has the "very very low probability" of bricking.
My Z490 never bricked; I read the threads and lived the horror story's along with them...
I want the "clean" bios "upgrade fix", not the "desolder-reprogram-chip-flashing-"nightmare fix".
...as do You I'm sure !
Sincerely, thank you for your focus, and the tools...(80,000 posts!) """"""""Daniel

Yes it is. At least for Z490 there are none reported brick cases, flashing to the latest BIOS version.
I also tested personally same msi class board to the latest BIOS with the tool multiple times, always goes fine.

i use a z790i Edge (without Bios Flash button) and tried to update a self modded Bios file with this tool, but got "secureflash rom verify Fail".
is there anything i can bypass the verification, without using a SPI Programmer?

It may not work even with SPI Programmer, the modded BIOS may refuse to run, depends of what security level those platform/BIOS are using.
