Hello there,

I just got my brand new MSI Modern 15 A11SB on Tuesday, and after less than 3 days of using it, it started freezing today, while NOT doing any heavy duty work.
I use it for music recording and photo editing. I also play some light games sometimes in the evening.

During the 2 freezes, I had graphical artefacts on the display, and the second time, also a sound glitch repeating itself.
While gaming, I noticed that the processor, although only being used from 25 to 35%, went to 95°C even with fans spinning pretty fast. The GPU stays "cool", between 60 and 70°C.

I'm worried, I spent double my initial budget in a laptop, so I could have a great display (near 100% sRGB and that's true, it's great!) but I'm worried this laptop won't last long if it gets that hot with light gaming and only after 3 days of usage.

This YouTube video is also reporting the issue:

Anybody havinng weird issues as well?
Thanks for your feedback

Kind regards

If you want to know if it's Windows 10 the culprit, this might help:

Regarding the freezing problem, try to reinstall Intel and Nvidia graphics drivers on MSI website with DDU tool.
As for overheating, did you encounter any performance problems when the CPU overheating?
apply high performance and cooler boost fan mode in MSI Center while gaming.

Thank you for your answer. I did check this article and apparently Windows 10 seems fine, I always disable all the services other than from Microsoft (unless they are really mandatory for my software), and I did run sfc and DISM. No issues found. Althought I don't have any more freeze for now, but I was really scared. Hopefully it's gone! Yet...

Thank you for your answer. I did reinstall Intel drivers, as the issues were happening on 2D mode while being on the desktop (the NVIDIA goes on for 3D content only, as I think I know?), so far no more freezing.
BUT
The funny thing is that... with High Performance and Cooler Booster 3 fan mode... the processor STILL GET TO 95°C while being used only 30% while playing my game (Rocket League).
I think the reason is that the high performance mode sets the CPU to a constant 4,2 GHz.
If I play the game with Power saving mode (the 4th mode in MSI Center), the processor doesn't get above 70-72°C. And the game performance is AS GOOD. In both cases, the GPU doesn't go above 70°C (power saving and high performance modes). I think the cooling system is big on the GPU but weak on the CPU. But I think MSI could offer a way to get high spinning fan and a throtlling CPU. Because the constant +4 GHz in high performance is bad. In power saving mode, the CPU goes from 399 MHz to 4 GHz while gaming, and I didn't get a single lag, plus the computer keeps a low level noise.

MSI, you got some optimisation to make, please! Please allow us to select indenpendantly the CPU performance an level for fan speed. With mandatory high fan speed if using performance mode of course. But if would be great to be able to force the fans to spin higher WHILE keep the CPU with throtlling functionnality. And the brightness setting between modes should be gone. It's painful to switch between power modes and true color modes... each of them setting the brightness to a different level is very annoying.

And then magically, a third freeze happened doing while using my web browser and typing text. No graphic artefact or weird sound this time, just plain freeze. Zero information in Windows' logs. I'm clueless. MSI still didn't reach to me.

Try to update the latest bios and ec firmware.
And could you share your system info exported from msi center?
Meanwhile, I suggest you open a web ticket to submit these suggestions to MSI.
It's helpful for many users.

BIOS, drivers and Windows are fully updated. MSI reached to me and told me to manually install Windows 10 20H2 from Windows 10 2004. The install worked. Then a cumulative update appeared. While Windows Update was downloading it, the laptop froze again... it froze on the BSoD, first BSoD ever. It indicated an issue with the Wi-Fi card/driver.
Unfortunately, two drivers are offered for this wifi card and none of them are solving the freezes.

I tried everything with MSI. Nothing helped at all. You should send it back. How much did you pay for it? What specs? There's dozens of different exact models..

Please message MSI customer support so that they're aware there's a big issue with their new series of Modern 15 laptops.

Good luck to you, take care

I purchased my MSI Modern 15 A11SB (intel core i7, 16GB memory) from Best Buy on the 26th of March and received it on April 1st. The first two days it froze three times. The screen won't move, can't type or move the cursor, have to use the power button for a manual shut off/on. I thought it was my two antivirus software causing problems with one another. I uninstalled Mcafee and only have Norton now (I've previously never had problems with Norton). The computer was fine for a couple of days, I have noticed that the battery-life even on power saver is much less than the 10+ hours they say. But then tonight it froze again, the same problem as before. I filed a ticket but will be returning my laptop to best buy before April 15th to get my full refund under their 15-day refund policy. I was hoping this would be my "ideal" computer, I'm super disappointed. I'm also disappointed that MSI's "live chat" button goes to a 404 missing page, not cool.
