That's why it didn't work, you have to clear your browser cache and make sure all cookies are removed also, you must use your VPN with a clean slate only,
if not, all your past information will reveal your true identity.
I have several laptops, so I dedicate one for my home that does nothing but this, and the one I use for travel, I avoid as much as possible using it at home.

Have the same problem in Australia sometimes, but I can use my mobile, as somehow when I set it up, 5 years ago, it defaulted to the UK for my region, which may have been because it was an imported UK Mobile model.
I have replaced the mobile twice since then, and it still defaults to UK for Region even though it is an AU Model.

Last couple of times I used a VPN, it messed up MS Store services.

Australian ISPS actively block VPN if they are used to bypass geo-locks so most wont work correctly

That is sad, I hope that other countries will not follow this example, it's enough China has strict measures against VPNs,
