GD-80 on for 1 second, than off.

My friend got a new board, CPU, and Ram. The GD-80, an I7 860, and 4GB of DDR3 1600mhz Gskill ram

His PSU is a 650 Watt, BFG, 2x12V rails @ 20A each, and 2 8800GT's SLI'd

We plugged everything in correctly, and sure enough it didn't boot. So, we resocketed the gpu's, and it worked. It ran for a bit, then shut down randomly and it took some time before we could boot it up again.

CPU temps were fine, around 38C. So we booted her up again, and she ran for a bit. We let her run overnight while copying files, but when we woke up she was off again.

Now she isn't booting up at all, we push the power, the lights on the motherboard light up for about 1 second, then turns off. The fan barely has time to spin.

We took everything off, it was just 1 stick of ram, the board, and the CPU. Same thing, attempts to boot for a split second then off it goes. We tried no ram, same thing.

We took out the CPU, same thing.

the LED displays an F quickly before it turns off, its very quick.

Please list all specs off psu, including amps on all rails.
Sounds like a dying/dead psu.
If you can test with another one, with sufficient amps on the +12V line and see if problem persists.
dont look at wattage, cause that means diddly squad, its all about amperage on the +12V lines.

And without a cpu trying to startup.....that will never work  ;D

Well, we tried with another power supply. Same issue, the little LED's turn on for about .5 to 1 second, then off. Then after 3-5 seconds it tries to boot again, then turns off, then on, then off.

2 PSU's and we got the same issue.

That junk powersupply is NOT able to power that system.
You need a powersupply with at least >40A single rail for that system.
Something like a Corsair VX550 or higher like HX650.

Do not keep trying with that BFG as you might blow your system to pieces!

BTW, 2x20A is not 40A, at best it's 25A :lol_anim:

My other power supply is a 3x18A 550 Antex power supply, with everything unplugged, just the ram/cpu/mobo, she wouldn't boot.

With the BFG she did boot, for a while, then restarted after 1-2 hours of use (not even use, just was on)

Ever since it turned off then, it just doesn't work.

I'm RMA'ing the fella

Antex? Never heard of that...if you mean Antec, sorry, never seen Antec 550 power a system like yours.
And I do not care how many split 12V rails it has....I only take SINGLE rail serious.
Ergo, >40A @ 12V, I bet it works fine.

ATM I am using an Antec with 4x12V rails @25 amps each, +5V @ 30Amps, +3.3 @ 25 amps, 1000 Watts.

But this is to power an
EVGA X58 SLI board
I7 920 @3.6GHZ
6Gb DDR3-1600mhz
2 x GTX285's 2GB
X-fi Titanium
1TB Western Digital Black drive

and shes holding well, thinkin of throwing a third in there.

My 550 Antec PSU had
2x8800GT's "1gb",
P5N-D SLI
Q9650,
8GB DDR2-800mhz,
X-fi titanium,
320 Barracuda,
and powered a waterpump to boot

3 12V rails at 18A each did the trick.
