Geforce 4 ti 4200

Hello
I bought a geforce 4 ti 4200 and for the most part I'm happy, I guess. Well u see I gave my older geforce 2 mx to a friend obviously because it to out dated for my gaming needs, but the geforce 4 ti 4200 isn't really improving that much. I really hope there is some sort of fault in my product because I've read reviews on the net and I know my system isn't like there's but still my frame rate im getting in games is sad compared to what my friends getting with his older pc. Before I go any further I'll tell you a basic system spec for both mine and my friends machine
My PC: amd athlon 1 ghz, 512ram, NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200
My Friends PC: PIII 800mhz, 128 ram, NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 100/200
I did a benchmark of frames per second I get in some games (all on the same detail as my friends pc) mostly the lowest, which I shouldnt have to do since I have a "good card"
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3:
My avg: 45 fps
My Friends avg:54
Obviously there is something wrong here.
Americas Army: Operations
My PC: avg 22fps
Friends PC: avg 22fps
Lowest detail settings possible(tell me there's something wrong here the new unreal tournament better not run like this).
GTA3
My PC: avg 50fps
My Friends: avg 23fps
Now that's a bit more believable.
Now I have the latest detonators that are certified by nvidia and everything else is up to date. We both have no background apps running.I'm confused can u figure out why im getting very poor performance. Is it cooling, should I go pick up a heat sink fan. I checked into this on some message boards and some people said my mother board is getting flooded by the video card since it's so fast and that's why I notice no speed increase or decrease when I change my video settings as well as notice a very low speed, since the mother board is to slow to keep up. By the way both of our pc's are not over clocked.
Another problem I had was with the nview, i want to play a game on one monitor and have say a walkthrough in notepad on another monitor...how can this be done(if it can be). Does the game need any sort of compatability with it, im lost here. If someone could please give me directions on how to do this i would apprieciate it.

Hi,
I had the same thing when I bought my Gf3. It looked stunning in games, but the frame rate was crap even at low level.
I solved this by updating MoBo bios, setting all Bios setting high and then overclocking a little. The theory about MoBo being flooded sounds plauseable.
Make sure vsinc is off and setting framebuffers to a setting your happy with (framebuffers can affect weather the mouse will appear sticky or not in games 16 is good for benchmark, bout 3/5 for games).
I also use anisotropy at 16 in d3d which is bad for 3dmark2001 but gives a nice even framerate in games.
I use det 29.42 and use Geforce Tweek Utility to get the most out of options.

BTW i'm pretty sure the ti's dont do that multimonitor thing you want. Only MX version.

Be careful, and only do the MoBo bios if you think it really needs it.
My Bios was two years out of date, but I was able to overclock and have all settings high and stable after update. In turn stimulated Gf3 for higher performance.

You will have to be exact on the make and model of Motherboard to get correct BIOS.
If you have documentation for MoBo this will have all relevent info, or have a look at MoBo it self

GF4 Ti does support nView, however you can't have a 3D rendering on one monitor and a 2D desktop on another.

You can have your desktop on 2 monitors or a 3D game on 2 monitors (if the game supports it).

Assaf thanks for clearing that up. Im a lil ticked off about it, but ill get over it.

well on the ecs website they said only update ur bios if your pc isnt functioning properly and if the patch on the bios is for your specific problem so didnt update since they didnt have a bios patch for it. by the way my motherboard is a ecs k7ama. im a little confused when it comes to updating the mobo so thats why i never have done it. If it's not too much to ask i can give you a link, since i know jack all about updating mobos, could you find if I need any thing on it. Im running windows Xp. All the driver updates for the mobo are not for win xp, so does that mean windows has the best drivers?http://www.ecsusa.com/ecsusa/www.ecs.com.tw/download/k7ama.htm thats for the bios page.

Maybe i missread something but uhhhh..... you did't stated your specs like memory, cpu ( speed ),psu ( wattage)

I've got a ti4200 and it sure gives me higher fsb than the gf2 mx in one of my other systems.

There happy?

You could get the AGP vxd driver, if this is newer than what you have installed already.
There are newer Bios there for your MoBo.(going by the fact you haven't updated and the board is over 1yr old)
But first try Bios setting up a bit higher.
Can you set Agp at 4X (or is it at 4X already)
Are there any Cpu enhancement options? Try them higher.
A new Bios should allow Cpu enhancements to run more stable. As the Bios is made for newer Amd chips??
Try a benchmark program like 3dbenchmark2001, or Quake3. These are better at judging card speed, and comparing to others to see if to slow or not.
Your det driver is fine if you want to use GTUtility.

Try the games with higher resolutions. Does it play the same(don't worry bout fps). 1024X768 should be min for settings.

hey bios' are not my cup of tea here i dont really know what im doing but i went in the bios and saw nothing relating to my video card like nothing on the agp rate. i am confused here where do i update my bios(is updating the same as patching it). I know i'm dishing out the requests but im a learner with mobos so i g2 learn somehow so could u plz find a link to the specific bios update u think i need. Ive been using gtu for at least a yr now so ive set the anisotropy to 16 and the framebuffer to 4 and i set the agp to 4x through gtu so is that the same as through my bios and i normally change the level of aa i use(normally 2x or quincunx). btw i did turn up my res to 1024x768 with 2x aa with triple buffering cubemapping and the works and it plays the same shiRty frame rate about 22 in americas army operations. im downright mad. ill run a betchmark right now after this post so ill tell u my score(normally it isnt nearly as high as it shuld be). i had to reformat a while back so i ahve to redownload 3d benchmark on my 56k!!!

The new Bios is the 02/04/04. If you go back a page there is info on installing Ali. Do this as last resort though. Also get the AGP vxd driver. If this is newer.

There doesn't seem to be any option in your Bios setup that can set AGP, so-
Get wcpuid from Amd and check the chipset info and this will tell you if 4X is actually enabled.

If not you will have to talk to someone who owns this MoBo, or email company.

The card is working fine isn't it? There are no screen corrutions etc. Just slow?

Yea well 4x agp is enabled so im really clueless, is it possible that the card is a defect, would it be possible to just be real slow but still work. i wouldnt of damaged it from oc because i never oc the card. i downloaded 3d mark 2001 and got a score that really sucks for my card, it makes me wanna cry that i spent all that money on this. i got 3684 on the default settings. ;( i emailed tech support at msi and got no response and i dont see why i would email ecs tech support its not there product. while i was looking around in the bios i saw two things that may help, one was an option to set everything for optimal and another setting for the bewst performance... i didnt change any thing because well i dont know what they would do

I've never heard of a bung card that would give slow performance. They either work or don't work or half work.
Could be your drivers, which should have been my first line of thought.
I don't use MSI drivers, I get mine from guru3d. I'm happy on the 29.42.
But if you are using the 21 23 or 27 series get newer and see if this helps.
You could take the card back, but I had the same thing when I first bought mine(I swapped between brands twice, before I ended back with MSI). I just had to get of the standard drivers to see performance increase.

Have you got the newer bios for the card?

Changing them options in bios shouldn't kill your MoBo. Best performance may make it unstable, but you can always go back to standard. I think best would set aggresive timings on CPU / PCI / AGP / RAM etc.

Have you got the newer bios for the card?
my mobo? if so then no i didnt im getting some people who i know to ckeck out my problem, not that i dont trust u.i am dling the uncertified dets and if that fails to help i will go in my bios and change the settings for optimal, i dont know why im trying to improve speed and optimal sugests slower speed but better quality??? better performance will lack quality or stability right but increase speed. im my bios i didnt see and option to return to my original state but ill chekc again cause if it does screw up i will want to go back.

ill post after i test everything

Live Update should tell you if you have newer bios for card (when it works). But should be last on list.

LOL
you don't trust me. im just the writing on the wall. good idea to get someone else as I can only offer suggestions. i'm still learning all the time so i try not to suggest stuff that could harm one's puter.

one last point is - that 3dmark score isn't far of what you should expect with your CPU etc.(back to that thought that the card is to fast for system)
If you have a chance try a gf3 in your system to see what happens(good local suppliers can happily do this)

tell us how you go with everything....

do u mean windows update? btw i trust u im fugucking clueless here, i changed all those settings in the bios to find they jack all... and once again ive proven how dumb i am(not literally, im only 15 here gimme credit) i dled the drivers i already had them, but i thot i didnt update them after reformatting. so im gonna wait for my british friend to help me out, and i got a friend on the west coast trying to help...i dont expect much out of tech support tho which is pathetic

If you have an MSI card, you should have a program called Live Update.
It can tell you what Bios is new and can update for u over the net etc. For this program to work properley internet settings must be lowered.
Some new Nvidia detonator drivers is what your after as well, if you are still using standard from CD.
Hope your buddy helps...

Armstrong,
keep an eye on the most marked
GeForce 4 Ti 4400 "Performance Threshhold"?
That seems similar to u, so see how it pans out.

did you try another mobo with ur vga ?

I ever heard the ALi chipset have trouble with their performance. Even Abit KT7A (with SDRAM) can beat that chipset even their equip with DDR SDRAM. A lot article you can find about this chipset trouble.

My opini is maybe the problem just with your mobo (chipset). But maybe this not ECS false but just bad perfomance chipset you have.

Try with another mobo, ok ?

FYI, my 3D Mark 2001 SE 330 (setting is default) : 5011
