Can anybody tell me why do I get

Memory: 32 MB
Memory type: DDR SDRAM

in the MSI Information tag in video properties of my GForce4 MX 460 although the specification for this video card says 64 MB? What may be the problem.

Thanks,

luishen

Try Start/Run/dxdiag. This will launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (I hope you are using Windows :D ). Check the Display tab. Do you get the same result?

MSI-Information is newer same in mine case, 0, 3,128 mb. I'm using XP.

You can get shareware version of sis sandra software, it's must better and more details information about your card.

Hi Bluesky and others,

Thanks for the help. I followed the advice and used the dxdiag test. Got the results below that seem to confirm my expectation: the card has a flaw. Could anybody take a more technical look?

There is not much to tell... 32 is not 64 whatever you do. It might be a good time to have a meeting with your vendor. If the memory IC is a BGA (Ball Grid Array), there are greater chances that the IC was not soldered correctly. Maybe that's the cause, and not a fake IC, considering the fact that the board is a MSI. However, I found out that many vendors do not have the slightest idea about the products, so make sure you have with you papers to prove that you bought a card that should have 64 MB.

It will not be difficult to show them the amount of RAM on your card. During booting, the first image diplayed (for a short time) is info about the Video Card (including RAM).

And a suggestion: use refresh rates above 85 Hz (or at least 85), otherwise you might have problems with your eyes.

Hi Bluesky,

Thank you once more. I already contacted the guy who sold me the card and I will probably replace this one sometime this week. But I'm sure he didn't have a clue of what I told him.
As for the advice, I can't see the memory size when the system boots up. The monitor pops up after the booting has passed the first screen. However, I ran sisoftware sandra and checked video adapter memory. I t shows information I can't interpret:

Total memory: 32 MB (32 mB Video) (64 Mb AGP)

It intrigues me the fact that some testing programs like this one show me (I think) some sort of memory split in two channels. Is it possible the card uses 32 MB for each video output (dual VGA) even though I have only used one monitor?

Take care,

Luishen

You can press CTRL-ALT-DEL during booting (although not recommended to do it too often) and make computer restart. This time you will be able to see the info about your card. This can be repeted when you're back to the vendor.

Use WCPUID , this program also displays info about your system. I am not sure, but the 64 MB AGP might be the Graphics Aperture Size, which is set from BIOS. You can check the Aperture Size using WCPUID (and also from BIOS).

Benchmark programs like 3D Mark also can display info about the video card.

I don't think that the card uses 32MB for each output.

I also have a 64 MB Graphic Card with dual VGA and all programs (including DirectX Diagnostic Tool) are reporting 64MB Video Memory and 64MB the Aperture Size (as set from BIOS).

Good luck,

Bluesky

Thanks everybody. I went to the vendor of my card and replaced it for a new one. The old card was flawed.
