Give it another shot? X58 Pro build

Well, after about a month of instability with my X58 Pro board, I finally returned it.  Though my only option was to do an exchange for the same board.  Here I sit with a bad taste in my mouth with this board and I am thinking about giving it another shot.

I never could get the system to run stable for more than 48 hrs.  I had a good run twice of 30 hr and another at around 48.  usually the system would lock up or reboot ~ twice a day.

I have these now installed on another manufacturer's board and I have broken the 48 hr mark of stability.... same components and I did not do a reinstall of the OS

Anyways, thinking of either putting the unopened MSI board on Ebay, or possibly doing another build and turning my wife's machine into a server and giving her the X58 pro based machine.

Should I cut my losses or give it another shot?

I've just started on a 4th X58 Pro build, having had no significant issues on the first 3. The only thing I did on all of them, was to reset the heatsinks. On two of them, it probably wasn't necessary. The IOH temps were low 70's at idle, & the 3rd bounced around 79-81. Not enough thermal compound on the one (in my opinion), was the reason for it's elevated idle temp. The 4th will get the 'redo' treatment as a precaution, however, I haven't read of any actual X58 Pro (IOH) chip excessive heat failures.

I didn't have IOH temp problems.  I was seeing ~60*C idle and a max of 74*C under load.

I am talking about overall general stability.  I would open outlook and boom, shuts down.  It would be sitting at idle, boom restart.  Would be surfing the web, boom lockup.

If there were a general QC problem with a batch of boards, not referring to high IOH(really not that high), we would be inundated with posts about stability. We are not--so, I don't believe there is an issue with the line-up.

I say the odds are extremely low that you'll have another mobo like the one you returned. Were you overclocking the mobo you returned? Except for the power supply we have nearly identical hardware (I have a 750w Corsair) and my rig has been rock solid.

I was overclocking the memory using XMP settings.  That said, I tried underclocking the memory, and the system was actually less stable; everything else at stock speeds.  The best I saw the board perform stability wise was with a beta bios from MSI and XMP enabled

If you decide to try with the new board, try with just 1 mem. stick in the black A0 slot, & XMP disabled. See if CPU-Z (mem. tab) shows 667 9 9 9 24 1T(N) as 'default' set by the bios.
