Hello again;

Can anybody from MSI confirm if this upgrade will work inside the GT70 2PC Dominator Pro (MS-1763).  My main concern is if the included thermal assembly module will fit.

Thanks
Jamie

GT72 is not running on Optimus architecture, but GT70 is.
So your 970M won't work.
You need to reflash the appropriate VBIOS on 970M first, but I don't think there's such VBIOS for such upgrade.
And of course the thermal module is slightly different because of the difference of the electric components on both MXM boards.

No this is not true.  The GT72 6gb card will work fine in your GT70.  The optimus or not is not an issue at all.  I can vouch for this as I have personally used both Clevo and MSI GT72 6gb vBios on my 6gb 970m card that was upgraded into my GT60 laptop.  Both MSI and Clevo, and SLV7 and Prema unlocked vBIOS all work without any issues and all install normal Nvidia drivers.

You are correct that the thermal heatsink isn't fully compatible, that is until you do the slight/small mod to the heatsink.

See my thread here.

You can upgrade to either a GTX 970m or 980m.  They will both work perfectly fine, and they have been tested across various systems with compatibility.  Heck even a GTX 970m works on the old GX660 (16F1).

Hello Talon,
I knew your post. Cool.
I saw someone shared it before.
If you are using the modified VBIOS, then yes it can work.

He does not need to use any modded vBios for it to work.

MSI GT72 970m vBIOS = Work 100%
Clevo 970m vBIOS = Work 100%
Unlocked VBIOS = Work 100%

I'm not sure how much more clear this can be made to people.  When you use a GT60/70 Haswell laptop, they work 100% without any need for modded INF drivers.  After the heatsink mod, or if you're lucky enough to source a MSI 970m heatsink, it is plug and play.

Thanks for your input Talon.  I actually stumbled upon your awesome thread in the notebook forums a few weeks ago.  Only thing I'm a bit skeptical of is the "modification" with the dremel tool on the heatsink side, which is why I asked if the actual MXM upgrade from MSI would work.  Now that I have no other choice, it looks like the modification will have to suffice in order for this to work.

My next questions/issues are:

1)  Which vBios is both stable with the card and my system?

2)  Which Nvidia driver is stable, again, with the card and system?

Specs of GT70 2PC-1044US (AHCI Mode)
OS: Win 7 Ultimate x64bit
Bios: E1763IMS.50R
EC Firmware: 1763EMS1 Version 5.17
vBios: 80.04.F7.00.06

Excuse me if I'm being to concerned, hope you all understand I want to be 100% sure that this mod will work without 1)bricking the system/making it unstable/the need to install modified system drivers/firmware and 2) giving the ability to upgrade for future games without the need to purchase an entire new system.

I totally understand you concern over what modifications need to be made, and how the upgrade will affect system stability.

I recommend updating your system BIOS to MSI latest version first.

http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GT70-2PC-Dominator.html#down-bios&Win7 64

Follow MSI instructions on this page to the T!  It does say that you should update to version .10V before version .118!  This will prevent you bricking your notebook.  MSI updated their BIOS updating procedure in the .10V update.  If you fail to have this updated procedure, and attempt to flash a newer version, upon reboot your laptop will be bricked and will be required to be sent into MSI.

Again, FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS.  There is a PDF guide on how to flash the BIOS at the bottom of the page.  Its easy enough, but just follow it.

As to your question if the GT72 upgrade kit would work.  Yes, the card will work, no the heatsink will not work.  The heatsink is made for a GT72, logic here says that no it will not work as the laptops have different chassis layouts.

If you want to avoid the dremel ....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-Heatsink-Nvidia-GTX-970m-GTX-980m-MSI-GT780-GT70-MS-1761-MS-1762-MS-1763-/321688321258?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4ae61e3cea

This is a GT60/GT70 MSI 970m/980m fully compatible heatsink.  This heatsink works in any GT60/70, GX660, GX60, GT683, GT780/783, as they all share the exact same chassis layout and have not changed over the past few years.  Buying this stupid expensive heatsink would alleviate the need for any modding/dremeling of your current heatsink.  Of course the seller knows this heatsink if sought after, and therefore has a ridiculously inflated price.  But this is 100% plug and play.

As far as which driver is stable, not sure what you mean.  All of the drivers that support a 970m are stable and compatible.  You should not ever have any issues that any other laptop with a 970m doesn't have or any sort of compatibility issues with any games, again, unless its a common problem with all 970m GPUs.

Goodluck and have fun with the upgrade!

This is really an useful topic, I think everyone should read the thread if you want to upgrade graphic card for MSI GT series.

I did try the GT60 GTX675M upgrade to GTX870M, that works fine, but you have to remove NVNDIA graphics driver first, install the new MXM module and make sure the heatsink matched your MXM placement, and install the latest NVIDIA Graphics driver. Mostly I don't use Optimus since I just want performance.
