Hi!  I just bought this laptop in Oct. today I turned it on and the fan has been coming on a great deal.  Usually when I am just going on the net or reading my email it comes on once or twice.  Today it has been coming on and running constantly.  I am not playing any games and the temp is 43 according to evga thing.  It has not happened like this before and I am not sure if I should be worried.

thanks,

Pixiey
Ps should I get a fan for the bottom of this laptop?  Do they make them this big?

Hi,

I have the same laptop and the same problem from the first minute I bought the laptop. My fan starts up, keeps running for 5 minutes, stops for 2 - 3 minutes, starts running for 5 minutes etc. etc. A very consistent pattern. It has been in repair, but the Dutch MSI repair agent replaced was not able to fix the problem (they replaced the fan, but obviously that was not the problem!)

See my topic: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=155606.0. I guess the solution for my problem = solution for your problem.

Regards,
Sander

My take on this is that the BIOS fan profile deliberatly causes this behaviour. i.e. when the CPU is in an idle state and the temp is sufficiently low, then no fan is needed and the fan switches off until the temp has increased again to warrant fan usage.
Suggest you check with >>How to contact MSI.<<  to confirm if that is the case and if there is any BIOS change that can be done to rather give you a constant minimum fan speed.

I have serveral MSI laptops (and other brands too) they all have this.
Fans stop when being cold and start when temps go up.
Nothing special about this, even my Windpad 110W does this.

But also every few seconds minutes? (I never experienced this with a laptop and it drives me crazy!)

(sorry Pixiey: trying not to hijack your topic)

Edit: not seconds, but minutes (sorry)

keeps running for 5 minutes, stops for 2 - 3 minutes,
as quoted earlier, that would be normal behaviour.

But now the time intervals changed,
But also every few seconds?

Edit: Have you tried Speedfan to see if it can control the CPU fan ?

Sorry: typo (not seconds, but minutes). Pattern is: 5 minutes on (very hard blowing), 2-3 minutes off.

No, I asume this is a shareware program? I'm gonna look for it and see if it can control the fan. That would solve my issue.

I read about speedfan and it seemed that this programm is not compatible with MSI GT780. I have opened a seperate topic to ask how I can control the fan speed of the laptop.

Edit: I have tested speedfan, MSI Afterburner and Rivatuner and you can adjust a lot of thinks, but fan speed is not one of them  :(

Maybe get in touch with the developer. He assisted me before with a PC that I alaso could not adjust the fans speeds.
If at all possible, he will try and help you.

I'm not 100% sure but from what I've found out by googeling it several times:
This model might not have a seperate CPU and GPU fan and heatsink, but just one...
If it is so this could explain why the fan is running even if GPU temperature seems not to be an issue (because CPU temp could be).

But my issue is not that much that the fan keeps on running. It is the fact that it fluctuates between off and hard blowing every few minutes. If I could configure it in such a way that it would keep on blowing on an acceptable rpm so it doesn't need to stop blowing completely notices that it becomes to hot and starts blowing like hell to start cooling stops again etc. etc. I would be a happy MSI user!
