Hi,

I'm new to these forums and I don't really know the correct protocols for seeking assistance.
But here goes...

My new build is unstable.
It will run for a while with one memory stick. Won't boot at all with two. (Constant reboot).
Doesn't matter which memory stick or which memory slot I use,

Updated the bios to 1.9. Seems to run better now on one stick.
Still won't run with 2

Memory is Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9
MD H55M-E33
i3 530 Clarkdale

Any advice is appreciated.

Tom

You need to check your BIOS what the system sets your memory to.
Manually change your DRAM ratio so that your memory runs at 1333 9.9.9.24 @ 1,5V for now and test with 1 and 2 sticks.

Thanks Svet,

Here's what I have so far.

H55M-E33 (MS-7636 ver. 1.0), AMI BIOS 1.9
CPU i3 530, XP Home/SP3 32 bit
Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9
Samsung 1TB HD, SATA. BIOS ID's as "HD103UJ"
Lite-on IDE DVD/CD R/W.  BIOS ID's as iHAS324

I'm using the on-board video and I've tried both default setting on the BIOS
No overclocking, just standard settings.

I'll need to pull the drives if any more info is needed for them.

System will not start with both 2G memory sticks installed.
Either constant re-start, or runs with no video at all.
Never see anything on the monitor with both memory sticks installed.
Starts and boots OK with either stick installed in any slot.

Has been unstable even then, but that may be cured after BIOS upgrade (from 1.3 to 1.9)
(haven't ran it long enough to be sure, just updated bios last night)

....

Thanks zsde,

I'll try that and get back,

Did the clear CMOS. Set timing to T2. Both sticks are OK in slot 1.
Works with either stick, but not with both.
Never starts at all.
Powers up, fans on, but no display on monitor at all,

Also zsde...
memory set to 1333 9.9.9.24 @ 1.5V (actually defaults to 1.65V, but no change either way)

edit...
tried slots 1 and 3 together. Begins to boot. Sometimes even starts windows, but then the display goes nuts, with alternating bars. (Saw it described in another post I think).

edit...
yes, screen looks same as described (and pictured) in Topic: "H55M-E33 (1.3 bios), i3-530 - freeze with flickering screen"

Starting to look like maybe a CPU reseat & a close inspection of the socket pins is in order. Also close inspection of the CPU pads for full contact. If a single stick works in 'all' the slots, it seems unlikely to be a defective dimm slot. Sounds like you tried 1333, 9 9 9 24, CR 2 @ 1.50V's already. If possible, can you test with another RAM kit? Crucial 1333's?

Added: In BIOS Cell Menu, make sure 'Spread Spectrum' is disabled. Also, do you have 'DRAM Timing Mode' set to 'Linked'. It still is a bit odd to see any of the two RAM sticks individually boot the system in any dimm slot. It should be initial setup in dimm 1 (black slot closest to CPU) with one stick, boot, shut down & add the second stick in the last black dimm 3, & presto, working system.

No luck. And now I'm getting random failures even with only one memory stick in some slots. I'll try the CPU re-seat and if that doesn't work, it's back to Fry's (with the MB at least, and maybe the whole she-bang!)

Don't think I've ever had such a time getting a system up and running! (and I'm pretty dang old too!)

That's not a good sign at all. Which PSU are you using? Failing PSU's can cause weird things to happen. I've heard Fry's is pretty good at helping getting to the root of system problems. Please let the forum know how it goes.

PS is a 500W Cooler Master "Silent Pro" (RS-500-AMBA-D3).

Pulled and inspected the board, heat sink and CPU and socket. All looks good.
Reassembled, still unstable.

Probably be the weekend before I get back to Fry's. I'll post my results.

Thanks to all for the advice.
Promised to get back after going back to the dealer.
Went back to Fry's (Milton, GA) on day 14 of my 15 day purchase window.

They were great.
==============

Service Department confirmed problem but were not 100% sure whether it was MB or CPU, so...

I asked for, and received, a full exchange on everything: CPU, MB, and Memory.
Great Service!
Here's to Frys Milton GA! Yay!

Just trying out the new hardware now.
So far so good...
