Has anyone had a problem with the socket for the Intel processor models 12/13?

is it worth changing the original socket on Msi tomahowkboard to a contact frame? Apparently the processors can bend, or maybe it's a marketing fejk to buy these frames ?

since the if i remember right the 3rd gen the CPU can Easily bend from too much mounting Pressure as Intel Made the CPU's PCBs super thin to save money so they bend easily. its not a new thing its just more prominent on the newer ones as the CPU's are held with much less contact to the socket as they uped the pins in the socket alot so made the mounting Brace spots even smaller.
 
For what it's worth....I fitted the contact frame, after using the stock clip for about a month
... due to YouTube advice, which we all know is the best place for advice lol.

In my case, temperatures were fine with the stock clip, but I got scared into fitting the contact frame in case of any long term issues.... needless to say, it made zero difference to temperatures.... at all.

Ymmv.
 
main time a Contact Frame is recommended is if your Using Liquid Metal as its a super thin Layer if your using normal Thermal Paste it may only make like maybe 1-2C difference.
 
The CPUs can bend over time, due to a badly designed socket applying pressure only in two "weak spots" on the longer sides, this is true. With some kind of better socket retention mechanism, you can usually get between 0-7°C better temperatures (depends on the individual CPU and the cooler, especially on the cooler's bottom contact area).

It's also beneficial just to reduce the mounting pressure of the socket mechanism, because the cooler's mounting mechanism will apply the correct mounting pressure onto the CPU anyway, it doesn't depend on the mounting pressure from the socket mechanism. Once you take off the stock mechanism, you will see that the screws are not tightened much at all, they are barely "catching", meaning that the board makers already applied very little torque in an attempt to minimize the mounting pressure onto the CPU as best they could (realizing that this is just a bad design). But it's not enough like that.

I used the low-end "washer mod" for my 13500 on Z690, see below 4) here. This didn't cost me anything at all, just four small metal washers i had, which i measured to have roughtly the same thickness. Around 1mm thickness is said to be ideal for this method, see here.

Whatever method you use, it's gonna be a bit better than leaving it as it is. In rare cases, there can be problems with it caused by worse contact of some socket pins to the CPU, but you'd notice that pretty quickly by something not working right. Usually it should all work, at slightly lower temperatures.

I used the Thermal Grizzly contact frame to prevent the cpu "bending" that was addressed in the NexusGamers video in the post above this one. My system is air-cooled and I did have cpu idle temps reduced by 2-3 degrees Centigrade. Relatively easy to install.
 
I've been running a 12700K/z690 with the stock clip, no issues or change in temps with over a year of damn near 24x7 utilization. Longterm I may eventually update to the last revision CPU made for this board and will likely buy the updated socket mount just for peace of mind.

What's really disappointing is even after this issue was identified none of the board manufacturers have bothered to update the socket to resolve this issue with their own solution on newer revision z690 or z790 MB's. Just bizarre you're expected to spend $400+ for a MB and then have to replace the socket mount.

most Manufacturers most the Cost of the Board is all the bells and Whistles they put on the boards and there is not much Margin in it as the manufacturers of the Chips on them charge alot and then the Maker adds tons of Coolers and Armour Plating to cover up the board as much as possible so if you want the manufacturers to add another $100+ to every board for a different mounting solution for the CPU then its not going to happen as all manufacturers tend to use one of 2 Manufacturers Sockets who make them on mass being Lotus Systems or Foxconn and they just do them to Intels Specs as mass produced Items.

to have a different Mounting System then its more down to Intel and AMD to define a new way to do it.
 
I think it would have been a huge value add for z790 with minimal cost and manufacturing refit and worth a small increase in price nowhere near $100, more like $20. It certainly would have made their mid and high-end boards stand out above others much more enticing than the few bells and whistles z790 introduced... ARGBv2...lol. Could have even contracted with Thermal Grizzly and through bulk buy made everyone a winner. Damn lack of vision if you ask me.

if you do extreme overclocking of the processor, high temperatures may occur, which may cause the processor to deform in the long run, it also depends on the processor you are using - some of them can actually get as hot as an oven, then it is better to put a frame on it. In normal use, there is nothing to worry about. They only drive sales with marketing based on frames. Besides, a new socket will be available soon.
 
I can't say I've really experienced this much. With my 13900k system, 13900 system, and 10700 system, and my old (now a friend has it) 9900k system, none of them have experienced warping or issues such as this. My 13900k doesn't get stressed as much as my old 9900k system did, but the 13900 and 10700 both get stressed daily (kids systems).
If it worries you, get a shim/frame. If it doesn't (like me), just make sure you get a good cooler that mounts nicely and you should be generally speaking fine.
This also assumes you're not doing a ton of overclocking, etc.....
My 13900k is full stock aside from setting the memory to 7000 MHz. It can get hot while gaming, but the temps are still more than reasonable for me anyway.
