I'll quote my other post:
I just found the post whilst searching for a very similar problem with a very similar setup.

I have a MSI P67A-GD65, a Corsair 256GB P256 SSD, and a WD VelociRaptor 600GB 10k RPM.

I have been copying data from my SSD to my WD drive and the computer freezes for a period (between 20 seconds and minute) after it has copied an amount of data. Sometimes it recovers from this freeze, and other times the the drive (the velcoiraptor) disappears from my computer.

I have set up the drives in both IDE and AHCI mode and have the same problem with each.

Full specs:
  • MSI P67A-GD65
  • Core I7 2600K @ 4.9GHz
  • HX520 PSU
  • GTX 580
  • Corsair P256 (port 0)
  • Velociraptor 600GB (port 8)
  • 4GB Mushkin RAM (single DIMM, single channel)
  • XFI Fatality Pro gamer sound

Any help much appreciated.

If this isn't the B3 board, get it replaced.

http://eu.msi.com/service/search/?kw=P67A-GD65&type=product

The non-B3 series have serious problems, and MSI replace them for the B3.

How would I find out whether it is 'B3' or otherwise?

If you have the CPUID's CPU-Z 1.57.1 Utility, in the Mainboard Tab, it may show if B2 or B3 along with BIOS version information. Also, printed on the PCB itself, it may read P67A-GD65(B3).

It also says B3 on the box :D!

I plugged the WD drive into the other controller (it no longer shows in the initial boot screen), and it works flawlessly now. I still have my SSD plugged into the other (Marvell) controller and that is faultless too.
