[HELP] MSI Z97M GAMING (MS-7919) - How do I enable TPM 2.0? (League of Legends Vanguard's requirement)

Hello everyone,

I'm facing an issue with enabling TPM 2.0 on my MSI Z97M GAMING motherboard (MS-7919), which is required to run the new anti-cheat system, Vanguard, implemented by Riot Games for League of Legends. Unfortunately, after following all the troubleshooting steps recommended by Riot Games, I've been unable to find the TPM option in my BIOS.

Here's what I've done so far:
  • - Checked for TPM support by running tpm.msc in Windows 11, which returned a message indicating no compatible TPM was found.
  • - Explored all relevant BIOS settings (Integrated Peripherals, Security, Advanced) on my current BIOS version E7919IMS V1.9 but found no mention of TPM-related settings.
  • - Researched BIOS updates and learned that updating the BIOS might introduce or enhance TPM support. However, I've also read numerous sources stating that BIOS updates can be risky, particularly for those not experienced with firmware updates, with the potential to cause irreversible damage to the computer.
Given these concerns, I'm hesitant to update the BIOS without further assurance. I'd appreciate any guidance or suggestions on how to proceed. Specifically, I'm looking for any safe methods to enable TPM or alternative solutions that might help me meet the Vanguard system requirements without a BIOS update.

There is no way as Win 11 only supports Intel 8th gen and up with TPM support

Your Board does not support TPM 2.0 but the earlier version TPM 1.2 not sure if you can still get a TPM add-in module

The rules for TPM 2.0 are like this:

If the board is older than 2015~2017, then it isn't TPM-2.0-compatible. It will only know TPM 1.2 internally, and it will only accept TPM 1.2 modules.
If the board is younger than that (on Intel: 100-series chipset and newer), then it already has a firmware TPM 2.0 in the BIOS: On Intel it's called PTT, on AMD it's fTPM.

So, old platforms you can't make TPM-2.0-compatible, new platforms have it in the BIOS already.

A BIOS update is not something to be feared, i do it regularly, i must've done it over 200 or 300 times easily over all the years, and only once did i ever encounter a show-stopping problem (but even that one i resolved in the end). You'd just download the latest version from https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z97M-GAMING/support , extract it onto a USB drive, open M-Flash in the BIOS, point it to said extracted file, confirm, it will start updating, and after two minutes or so, Bob's your uncle. Then you just gotta remember to enable XMP again for your RAM so it runs at the proper speed.

But as may have become clear, in this particular case, being a 90-series board, it's exactly one year/generation before the 100-series boards that first had TPM 2.0 support. So even with the latest BIOS you won't get any farther, it would only be useful to fix the bugs of the earlier BIOS versions. To have TPM 2.0 support, you need a newer combo of board and CPU. Ah, so you were just asking if there is a solution. No, not to my knowledge. As you can see from this website, the first Intel platforms that supported TPM 2.0 were the 100-series chipsets with their CPUs (Core i-6000/7000). So if you have a 90-series board with Core i-4000/5000, you cannot make it TPM 2.0-compatible, it will only have TPM 1.2, no matter what you do.

oddly when i was looking into this as i have an old, big bang XPower 2 running a i7-4790K sitting about after I upgraded to a z490 godlike with a i10970k
after using DuckDuckGo/Google and MSN's Co-pilot to search into this question,
as i don't like wasting still working good hardware
some, the answers (a good 1/3rd) I got more than just a few times saying you could use this MSI-TPM-2-0-MODULE-SPI from https://www.amazon.co.uk/ @£29.99
so, i wanted to check here as i'm not 100% believing it due to some of point you've made also would the bios even see the MSI-TPM-2-0-MODULE,
if I can't I'll keep it with windows 10 or as i did with my first big band XPower 1,
I'll run it as a server which is still going strong after being used for oc gaming then using it as a SBS 2011 Standard server until the end of last year just running websites and exchange ( until i had exchange public/private key problems due to no stack updates),
Now i installed server 2019 for hosting websites and file backup and its working great with 2x Kingston SSDs, or this time i was thinking of using the big bang XPower 2 as a Nas server or trying out steam Linux OS for older gaming
it's a pity Microsoft is creating a huge amount of e-waste
as i must get ready to build so many new office pc's soon just due to the tpm2 enforcement,
I'm tempted to use Rufus to remove the TPM2 Requirement from windows 11 and to use it to create local accounts as your now as most blocked from winver 23h22 / 24h22 (they've even started hide the how to create local accounts in 24h22 for non-techies)
I'm tempted to waste the £29.99 on the module for a test on the big bang XPower 2,
as i do have a few intel 100's chipsets and above motherboards sitting about if it doesn't work or be bypassed with a hack
if anyone try's the MSI-TPM-2-0-MODULE-SPI from Amazon before i do please post and let me know if there is away to not waste a fully working motherboard/cpu/ram etc

As has already been said. Older than 2015 it's got no chance.

It won't work. TPM modules are always a waste of money for normal end-users, from the day Microsoft announced this requirement and TPM modules went up in price. These older boards will not work with TPM 2.0 modules, they'd need a TPM 1.2 module (which is of course nonsense to get, because then you'd have the same as you have now in firmware already).

Trust me, if there was an easy way to get a TPM 2.0 module working on an old board, we would've read about it by now on here. You are better off bypassing the Win11 requirements with some tricks, everything will run fine as long as the CPU supports SSE4.2 (Intel) or SSE4a (AMD), because that will become a requirement for the next feature update. But only really old CPUs don't have that feature.

But in general, it's like i said in the beginning:

You cannot make a board that is too old have a TPM 2.0 by adding a TPM 2.0 module. The board will only work with TPM 1.2 modules if it's too old. And once you have a newer board that understands TPM 2.0, then it will already have that available in the BIOS. The most you need to do there is to update your BIOS to the latest version, and it will be active. So no matter how you look at it, the TPM modules are a waste of money.
