Compared to the desktop system, the laptop system has limited space for thermal solutions. The better the thermal solution in the laptop, the higher performance the laptop can reach.
With the effort of MSI engineering, the new Titan GT77, Raider GE77 HX series, Vector GP HX series with OverBoost technology can output up to 250 total when GPU and CPU are under full load!
MSI has released a tutorial video explaining how the MSI OverBoost technology works.
The desktop-level hardware

The most crucial change of MSI Titan GT77, Raider GE77 HX series, Vector GP HX series is the CPU, which is up to Intel® Core™ i9-12900HX Processor.
Compare to the 12th gen “H” i9 and i7 processor, the “HX” processor has 2 more Performance cores, also, the Max Turbo Boost power has also raised to over 150 Watts.
That means you now have a desktop CPU installed within your thin and portable laptop!
With the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Laptop GPU, the resource-demanding software that traditionally requires desktops can now be executed on the MSI Titan GT77, Raider GE77 HX series, Vector GP HX series.
The need of MSI OverBoost technology

All the modern gaming laptop with NVIDIA GPU has a feature called “NVIDIA Dynamic Boost 2.0”. When the laptop is running GPU demanding software such as games, Dynamic Boost 2.0 will automatically lower the limit of CPU wattage, for example, 55 Watts in order to keep the GPU running at high performance state. However, this will also reduce the CPU performance.
Now with MSI OverBoost technology, the MSI laptop with Intel 12th gen HX processors can held the CPU at a higher wattage compare to regular laptop which is up to 75 Watts under full CPU and GPU loading.
Importance of CPU and GPU wattage

The reason the wattage of CPU and GPU is being emphasized, is because it determines the limit of the performance directly.
Wattage is the scientific unit of power, and chips heat up when it computes and consumes power. If the chip heats up and the heatsink is unable to cool down the CPU or GPU, the chip itself will automatically decrease its performance to prevent from burning up, this is also known as throttling.
Therefore, the limit of computing ability is basically decided by the CPU/GPU power and thermal solution.
How CPU wattage affects performance

To test how wattage affects performance, we set the Max Turbo Boost power of the CPU to 75watts, 55watts and 30watts respectively.
Let’s look at the result.
In Cinebench R23 and 3D mark time spy, 75Watts result is higher than others.

Next, let’s look how it affects gameplay.
In Shadow of Tomb Raider and Forza Horizon 5 benchmark, 75Watt result is still higher than the other two.

MSI OverBoost your overall performance

In conclusion, the MSI OverBoost helps the laptop performance boost to another level. Note that Titan GT77, Raider GE77 HX, Vector GP76 HX support up to 250W OverBoost, Raider GE67 HX, Vector GP66 HX support up to 220W OverBoost, please check with local dealer prior to the purchase.
