I installed my new PC-3200 512+512MB Kingston HyperX kit last week. I adjusted the BIOS timings accordingly, but as expected, I saw no major difference in improvement over the memory I had before. (What am I missing here?) Anyhow, I played the Painkiller game demo, and it exited to Windows after about 10 minutes of play. The second play ran fine. Next, I ran 3DMark 2001, and I got a score of 13,979.
I left the computer idle for the night, and all of a sudden, it was making noise! It sounded something like the CPU fan chipping away at a piece of loose wire, but the sound was coming from one of my new Maxtor 7200RPM Serial ATA drives. Instantly, Windows XP froze.
I rebooted, and everything was A-okay. But upon arriving home from work the next day, I saw a bootup screen saying "Cannot boot from previous device". It was official - Serial ATA 1 was dead. I sent RMA's for an exchange of the Serial ATA drive and a refund of the memory.
I reinstalled Windows on my other SATA, and it is now my new boot drive until my replacement SATA comes in. Everything is up and running and A-okay again! As of now, I would still enjoy a Kingston ValueRam upgrade, but something less pricey. Considering how HyperX didn't improve performance much, I doubt any large amount of money spent will justify an upgrade.
Right now, I have two PC-2100's - 512+256MB sticks, don't know what kind. The multiple choice question is: If I had to make either choice to save money but still improve performance, would I be better off upgrading it for bandwidth (-> PC-2700 or 3200) or capacity (-> 1GB)?
Any information is appreciated. Thanks!
