HyperX killed my computer

I installed my new PC-3200 512+512MB Kingston HyperX kit last week. I adjusted the BIOS timings accordingly, but as expected, I saw no major difference in improvement over the memory I had before. (What am I missing here?) Anyhow, I played the Painkiller game demo, and it exited to Windows after about 10 minutes of play. The second play ran fine. Next, I ran 3DMark 2001, and I got a score of 13,979.

I left the computer idle for the night, and all of a sudden, it was making noise! It sounded something like the CPU fan chipping away at a piece of loose wire, but the sound was coming from one of my new Maxtor 7200RPM Serial ATA drives. Instantly, Windows XP froze.

I rebooted, and everything was A-okay. But upon arriving home from work the next day, I saw a bootup screen saying "Cannot boot from previous device". It was official - Serial ATA 1 was dead. I sent RMA's for an exchange of the Serial ATA drive and a refund of the memory.

I reinstalled Windows on my other SATA, and it is now my new boot drive until my replacement SATA comes in. Everything is up and running and A-okay again! As of now, I would still enjoy a Kingston ValueRam upgrade, but something less pricey. Considering how HyperX didn't improve performance much, I doubt any large amount of money spent will justify an upgrade.

Right now, I have two PC-2100's - 512+256MB sticks, don't know what kind. The multiple choice question is: If I had to make either choice to save money but still improve performance, would I be better off upgrading it for bandwidth (-> PC-2700 or 3200) or capacity (-> 1GB)?

Any information is appreciated. Thanks! :-)

memory seams a bit hit n miss @ the mo with the current A64's .. i have cheap n cheerful sticks of 512mb DDR400 and its memtest and prime95 stable .. and i moved audiology card to a diff slot so 3d games are now stable (so far after 4 hours yesterday and 5 hours today)

my advice .. see what names are mentioned the most on the forums .. and buy something from msi's recommend list that isnt listed on the forums as troublesome

amount .. well xp32 and 64 will both run ok on 512mb .. but 1 gb is obviously better

I current am using Kingston HyperX pc3200 1gb set (2 512mb boards) CL2
I also have a set of corsair & geil boards. The kingston seem to be the most stable for me.

Here's a list as presented by users on this forum... some with timings and or voltages. There are a few "fixes" that may work as well!

FOOT NOTE

Here is a list of known "problems/fixes". If you notice an error, let me know.

#1

Problem: "booting" Windows XP 64 bit "PUBLIC BETA"

Fix: Enable "Cool & Quite" feature in BIOS

#2

Problem: unstable system (BSOD, MemTest86 errors, Prime95 errors, can't OC.

Fix "a": Manualy lower RAM speed (ie from DDR400 to DDR333) and/or increase voltage to RAM (ie from 2.6V to 2.7V) in BIOS

Fix "b": Manually set RAM timings (ie from 2-2-2-6 to 2-3-2-6)
