I have a x370 gaming pro carbon ac motherboard. I want to know if I update the bios will I be able to run a ryzen 9 5900x with it? Or will I have to get a new motherboard?

As you can see from the compatibility tab on your MB's support page; the 5900X is only supported by the latest BIOS. So it should work as long as you flash the BIOS before you drop in the new CPU.

That board's gettin a little long in the tooth though, so if it were me, I'd get a new one if I had the budget for it...

What do you mean by long in the tooth? As in it won’t get the full performance from it?

"Long in the tooth" just means it's getting old, and apparently so am I...

The board is old, the design of the voltage regulation is an older design and while it MAY work.....probably won't get the full potential out of that chip.....it doesn't support PCIe 4.0, so it won't make even close to full use of that chip.

While everyone complains about Intel's method of a new chipset every 2 years for their CPU's.....there's a pretty good reason for doing it. Things are advancing quicker, and by doing so it ensures the most compatibility and ensures you have the latest advances.

Personally, I would upgrade to a X570 board at least. Even one of the cheaper ones.
