You also need to be careful when purchasing USB 2.0 devices, hubs and card readers included. USB 2.0 devices can be sold as "full speed" or "high-speed." Full Speed devices will only transfer at 12Mbps(the max 1.1 protocol). High Speed devices will transfer faster than 12Mbps, but I don't believe it means it has to be able to transfer at 480Mbps--just faster than 12Mbps.

If a device is labled as USB 2.0 Full Speed it will appear under the standard USB. My Olympus Camera is labled as USB 2.0 Full Speed and this is where it appears. My Memorex USB 2.0 flash drive was labled "High Speed" and it is under the "Enhanced" controller tree. So remember, not all 2.0 devices are created equal.

I didn't know there is such a different in USB 2.0 standard. Most of the time, those USB device did not indicate whether it is "Full Speed" or "Hi-Speed". I checked my USB device, both the USB Hub and the Card Reader are Hi Speed.

I just discovered that the Card Reader will be attached to the Enhanced Host Controller regardless of how many times I plugged in and out of the machine. However for the USB Hub, it is connected to the system and the PC is restarted, it will be attached to the Enhanced Host Controller. If I removed and plugged in again, during the system is up, sometimes, it will attached to Standard Host Controller, which belongs to the USB driver provided by HP, and sometimes, it is attached to the Enhance Host Controller.

I can come out with the following posibilities:
1) XP issue.
2) The Card Reader and the USB have compatibility issue, i.e. 1 device will affect the other device.
3) HP USB Driver issue, such that it will "grep" the HUB whenever it detect a HUB is connected.

Can anybody help to suggest or rule out any posibilities?

Hello, i have the some problem with my scanner. when i connect to rear usb works good, but i connect in the front usb appears the message "unknowm device", and i connect my pen drive works in the front usb, but sometimes not, or works with front usb1 and not in the front usb2. What is that?? What can i do?? i must cut the cable??????

I read with great interest the front USB 2.0 problem.  What I am facing is a different set of problem where both the front USB as well as those on the mother board do not seem to be providing usb 2.0 support.  When a USb 2.0 device (such as a flash drive) is plugged in any of the ports, a message saying that "It could have worked faster with a usb 2.0 device driver".  The motherboard which I use is a MS KT4AV using VIA KT400A. 

I solved the problem some time back by installing a driver from somewhere (I just can't remember from where).  Now that I was forced to reformat the hard disk, I lost the earlier working driver.  Could someone help (Looks like it is not due to USBOC problem).

if you are running Windows XP SP1a or SP2 then you don't need any drivers, but you may just need to reinstall the current drivers, as i described earlier in this topic

if you are running Windows XP prior to SP1a, then you'll need the USB drivers, which i believe you can find at Windows Update

there is also a Via USB 2.0 patch, which you can download from your mobo's product page at www.msi.com.tw

Hi dears
my USB ports become disable and does not work,
my motherboard is K8N Neo2 platinium
I do this works to repair and solve problem:
1-uninstall and then install usb drivers again in device manager(windows found new hardware and install it and say that device is ready to use).
2-check BIOS setting (usb was enabled).
3-delete windows and install fresh windows xp.
4-when i connect my webcam to pc with usb cable, red LED of my camera become on, but in camera software warning that camera not detected please plug in to continue.
5-I removed all front usb wire in my case but still all of my usb (include rear) does not work.
I use usb for camera, mobile, flash and printer. but now i can not connect this devices to my pc.  
i still have problem
plz help me and apologize for my bad english language

Hey guys!

I had the same problem as ComputerTime had, but with my K8N Neo4-F, so I entered this thread and saw that the problem could be related to the 10th pin, but I already had it disconnected.
Doing some unistall to the Enhanced and Standar Open Host Controllers and letting windows to install them again solved my problem, now my flashdrives are detected as USB2.0 devices correctly.

Just to let you now that this is a possible solution too!

Thanks this solved my front panel USB problem. The cable on the Aquila is marked shield which is obviously wrong for an over current connection.

Is this applicable for 865PE Neo2 PFISR motherboard?

I have WinXP SP1 installed and my USB 2.0 Flash drive can't be detected by Windows when I plug it on the front panel but will work once I plug it on the rear USB panels.

Same here on my K9N Diamond.  Running XP Pro SP1, and when I plugged my flash drive into front USB port, Windows said I must have SP2.  At your suggestion, I tried it in the back panel ports, including the one on the D-Bracket, and it worked like a champ.

My Lian Li case has a molded connector up front, so doubt that I could get in there to cut the wire.  I assume that I could accomplish the same thing by cutting the wire back at the mobo header IF indeed there is a wire to pin 10 on the header.  My K9N Diamond manual shows pin 10 as USBOC for JUSB1, 2, and 3; and, JUSB2 and 3 are the ones I have connected to my front panel USB ports, because of their physical proximity..  They DO appear to have a wire into pin 10.  JUSB1, on the other hand, is connected to the USB port on the D-Bracket, and it does NOT appear to have a wire into pin 10.  I'll check this out more thoroughly when I get ready to do the surgery; but, just wanted your opionion (blessing?) on my observations.

Thank God, I googled this USB 2.0 problem once more.

My computer (mobo burnt out) died 2 months ago, when I was testing and diagnosing my friend's computer. But I am pretty broke, so I RMA'd my CPU, VGA card, memory and power supply, after I had bought a new mobo-- and that did not work. So finally at the end of last week, I figured it was the new mobo, so I return it and find a new MSI mobo to buy. (MSI K8T800 Pro Neo2 v2.0)

I hook up my mp3 player and get the dreaded, 'plug your crap into a hispeed port' from Windows. Which is a surprise since my last good mobo (Gigabyte K8T800 Pro) and my Antec LanBoy case there were no issue at all!

I was ready to cry. Over the past two days, I've installed all sorts of USB 2.0 drivers, and Windows XP knows they are 2.0, but they are not acting like 2.0 should.

Thank you, thank you, thank you- now all I have to do is go home (after work) remove pin10 on all headers...

Don't remove the pin or cut the pin off the MOBO, just remove the wire that goes to pin 10 if it is in a header block or don't connect the individual wire.
