Install Drivers for Thunderbolt

Hi,

I have a MSI Stealth GS66 12UGS laptop and I encountered a problem regarding the Thunderbolt port.

When connecting a device to this port, the device is not detected. It is ignored. There is no TB driver available on the manufacturer's website for Windows 11, however there is one for Windows 10. So I tried to download this driver and follow the PDF instructions from the manufacturer's website here: https://www.msi.com/faq/faq-3515

I get stuck on step number 2. I don't see Thunderbolt Controller in device manager. So I opened the BIOS to enable the Thuderbolt firmware update as instructed. However, to my surprise, there is no such item in the BIOS settings - I am sending a picture.

After that, I continued according to the instructions (probably unnecessary), but I couldn't get it to work. Can someone please advise?

Thank you.

Since MSI x intel 12th gen notebook with Windows 11 system, the thunderbolt driver is using generic driver which is bundled in Windows 11.
So, if the thunderbolt port malfunction, you only need to do EC reset, after EC reset, if the thunderbolt port still can not be used, you have to go to service for repair.

I have the exact same issue on the same model. Were you able to resolve the issue?

I haven't solved the problem yet, but it is an MSI driver error, or its absence. MSI relies on some built-in Thunderbolt driver for Windows 11, which the laptop obviously does not understand. The problem arises in the combination of MSI vs. Windows 11 vs. Intel. I have verified (on the given model) that if Windows 10 and the appropriate driver are installed from the MSI site, everything works fine. The solution will be when MSI releases the Thunderbolt driver for Windows 11.

At the moment, the situation is being resolved with the management in Taiwan and Microsoft. I am waiting for some response.

Thanks for letting me. After doing hours of research, I found out the following: Thunderbolt appears to be integrated with USB 4.0 in Windows 11. According to USB4(TM) driver in device manager, it appears to be using the driver for AMD.

After uninstalling the USB 4 device, I was able to install the Intel® Thunderbolt™ 3 and 4 DCH Driver. After rebooting the system, it shows Thunderbolt 4 under system devices in the device manager, but still it is not able to start the device properly.
MSI has listed a Thunderbolt driver for Windows 10 on this laptop, but supposedly because of USB 4 integration in Windows 11, there is not one listed. Lenovo listed a Thunderbolt driver for Windows 11 for some of their models back in March 2022. Hopefully, MSI can release one sooner.

Hey,

There is a new BIOS version, E16V5IMS.10B recently released that claims to fix the PD charging issue. After the installation, the PD charging is still not working for me. Have you tested it?

2.Fix the power delivery charging not working randomly with certain docking stations.

Hi,

yes, I received the installation of the new BIOS because I requested a bug from the manufacturer, who was supposed to provide a hotfix and fix it.

After upgrading to a new BIOS version, the problem got worse for me. The USB-C port stopped working completely. It doesn't even work to charge the mobile phone, transfer data, nothing at all. Just like the port shut down. I also tried going back to the previous version of the BIOS, but the problem did not change.

So before the BIOS upgrade, I could at least run the device via USB4 and everything worked fine, only Thunderbolt was not responding.
Now nothing works as if I didn't have the port. Big bad luck.

I just found that if the laptop is powered directly from the network, the port does not respond at all. However, as soon as the laptop runs on battery only and I connect, for example, a mobile phone, it starts to charge, but after about 3 seconds the charging stops.

It looks like some sort of power mode problem or battery circuit problem, but I haven't come up with anything. I tried almost everything I could think of and nothing helped. It really pisses me off.

I have the same problem. The thunderbolt port was working fine until last week and then it stopped completely, I have tried different monitors and different cables which were all working before with my laptop.
I haven't tried the BIOS update, but will try and give an update later if it helped.

I have GS66 12HU

I tried BIOS update and didn't help. looks like the USB port is completely dead because it's not even charging with a charger (which was working before)

OH GOD THIS IS THE WORST EXPERIENCE WITH AN MSI LAPTOP I'VE EVER HAD.

Longtime customer of MSI gaming laptops for business use. I've always been happy with the quality and performance for heavy IT workloads.

Not any longer.

Same issues as everyone here. I upgraded to the 10A BIOS after purchasing this unit last fall which was probably a mistake because then I started having the the intermittent boot issue. Power button, press-press-press-press, lights come on but nobody's home, long press power off, press-press-press-press, repeat until it finally posted and booted. At least my Thunderbolt port and PD were working then, it was just a pain in the ass to boot up most days.

After upgrading to the 10B BIOS, my Thunderbolt/USB-C port is now dead and the damn thing will only charge when powered off. Like others here, when the AC is plugged in while powered on, it cycles on and off and makes the laptop impossible to use. Unplug the AC and it works okay as long as the battery lasts.

And yes, I've performed an EC reset numerous times. It never improved a damn thing.

I opened a ticket with MSI a couple days ago and their only response was to send me a link to the online RMA form. Doh!! Guess this is a known freaking issue, huh MSI?

Can't downgrade the BIOS back to 10A either as the BIOS loader says the freaking file format is wrong! Same 10A zip file I downloaded and used last fall. I'd try re-downloading an older version in the unlikely event the one I still have became corrupt somehow, but hey, they don't provide older versions to download. What happened to being able to back up your current BIOS before performing and update so you could hopefully roll back in case things went a little sideways?!? C'mon MSI!!!!!! What the hell happened to QA before releasing crap??

This is a business laptop and I'm losing days of productivity now. Waiting for an RMA and not being able to do my job is not an option so I'm now forced to purchase a new laptop to migrate my workload to while I send this wonderful brick off to get it serviced or replaced. I wouldn't trust this model line going forward anyway so whatever they send us back will end up on the "use at your own rick" shelf in our inventory.

They ought to give us a refund or at least replace it with a comparable but different model that isn't plagued with issues.

Not Happy
