Has anyone run into this before.

Just built a new box (have built about 20 machines in the past) with i5, Gskill 2x2gb, 128gb SSD, Win7 64bit.
No overclocking yet, just some software install.
Then I added another Gskill 2x2gb into the other DIMM (1/3), no boot.
Then I mixed the ram around, no boot.
Then I went back to original DIMM config (4x2gb), no boot, I look down and it is seriously smoking.

I couldn't tell where the smoke was coming from since I was scrambling to unplug the power cord (which I did).

HELP.
(1) Does anyone know what the cause might be?
(2) What is salvagable?  Is the mobo fried?
(3) What should be my next steps to iterate through the testing of good parts?

THANKS in advance!

Me again.

I have examined the mobo and found a discoloration / oily looking / burned section right behind the memory modules.  A small chip between another chip and the capacitor?(markings: 983 470 6.3v).

Was this caused by the mobo?  or the memory?

Thanks. :undecided:

What you can do is to uplug the AC power from the system, then take out the board's battery for 10 sec and place it back. Once this is done, plug back the AC power and boot with 1 piece of RAM only. If this works, try adding the rest of the RAMs back leaving out the RAM which has that burnt sign. If everything goes well, that will mean that the issue lies with that particular RAM.

Here are photos of the board.  I put a yellow box around the burned out chip area behind the DIMMs.

Thanks, any help is appreciated.  I guess I have to RMA???

Aha, looks like a voltage regulator MOSFET got fried, probably for memory.

Did you have the PSU unplugged from AC power while changing parts around?

Yes the MB needs repaired or replaced.

Yes, I always unplug the cord.
This can happen when changing/adding the DDR3?
Could it happen if the DDR3 was DOA?

Thanks.
