Intel Chipset Driver crashes MEG Z690 ACE Windows 11

Every time I try to install Intel Chipset Driver 10.1.18836.8283 2021-11-02 on my MEG Z690 ACE in Windows 11, it blue screens the computer. Has anyone else experienced this? It's frustrating to say the least.

I'm not doing any over clocking. Everything is stock settings. I'm not even using the XMP settings.
Intel Core i9-12900K processor, EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 XC3 ULTRA video card, CRUCIAL 64GB DDR5 4800 C40 KIT RAM, Corsair HX850i Power Supply, Fractal Define 7 case, 2 X M.2 storage devices, and 6 SATA devices.

In case you are still on the original BIOS, try updating it: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MEG-Z690-ACE/support#support-main-block-download

Update how-to:
1) Get the latest BIOS. It's the topmost one on the MSI support page for your board.
2) Extract the file and you will get a text file and the BIOS file. Put the BIOS file into the root folder of a USB stick/drive.
3) Enter the BIOS by pressing DEL during boot, go to "M-FLASH" in the BIOS.
4) Once M-Flash (the updater) is loaded, it will show a list of your drives. Select the USB stick and select the previously extracted BIOS file on there.
5) It will ask for confirmation and then update the BIOS. It's fully automatic from there, takes about two minutes.

Even in the v11 BIOS, there are still several known bugs that need a future BIOS to resolve. But maybe your problem is already solved in v11.

And then you probably should enable XMP, you don't want your RAM to be a bottleneck for the CPU.

In the BIOS under Settings - Advanced - Integrated Peripherals, can you check if you can disable the external SATA controller? Just for testing, not permanently.

Reason being, the ASMedia controller MSI use for two of the SATA ports seems to cause some problems, see https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?...ck-watchdog-timeout-bsod.371394/#post-2105180

So i wonder if this is part of the issue here as well.
Hey! I forgot that I took a screenshot of the blue screen and that is the same error I get. CLOCK WATCHDOG TIMEOUT.

Ok, yeah. That ASMedia SATA controller has been nothing but trouble so far. It causes bluescreens, and the drives may appear as removable/hot-swappable in Windows.

The light at the end of the tunnel is that with a beta BIOS for the Z690 CARBON WIFI, the problem might have been resolved somewhat,

But this beta BIOS is not available for your board yet. I think they will just release a new stable BIOS for that sometime soon instead.

Then at least with that new BIOS, i would enable XMP. Otherwise you'd be losing quite some RAM performance, it would be a shame with your nice system.

That was it! Disabled the ASMedia SATA controller and I was able to install the Intel Chipset Drivers. I also had a problem with resetting/lockups when installing Corsair's iCUE Software to control my power supply. It fixed that as well!
Thanks a lot! I REALLY appreciate you taking the time to figure out what the issue was!
I plan to enable XMP but was holding off until I could get the system stable.
It took me a year to get a video card. I wanted a 3080 but I took what I was able to get checked out with, at retail price. It took me 2.5 months to get the other parts. The DDR5 RAM was a real pain! I had to drive 2 hours to another town, taking a risk the 1 kit, they showed in stock would still be there. On the plus side it was $150 cheaper than any other place listed online (not that I could buy it at that price).
So, the question is... Do I open a ticket with MSI? Or do I just share my experience in the other thread?

BTW it does show my hard drive as removable.

You're welcome, always glad to help. Opening a ticket with MSI is a good idea, cause they don't read this forum. So you want to make your problems known to them directly.

Even though the reponse uses templates or "boilerplate text", there will still be someone who looked at it to send you such a reply. The problem is, getting through to the actual MSI engineers when it comes to an issue. Meaning, several people in the chain have to deem your issue important enough that it's actually brought to the people in Taiwan who are working on the BIOS for example (which is often a way smaller team than people think, if it even can be called a team).

I don't know of a good way to get attention about an issue. Hell, there have been issues with the Z490 BIOS updates for a good 3/4 of a year now, with dozens upon dozens of affected people, and they haven't fixed that yet either. Then for some other issues, they are quick to work on it for some reason. It's a bit hard to tell what their rationale is behind it all. You did the right thing by reporting it, it's on them if they ignore it and eventually get more complaints and unsatisfied users because of that. But it might also be because they have a fix in the pipeline already.

For anyone stumbling on this thread, here is how to disable the ASMedia controller.

Until the bugs with the ASMedia ASM1061 SATA controller chip are fixed, here's where to disable it in the BIOS.
This will disable SATA ports A and B. The other four SATA ports (5-8) can still be used, because they are coming from the Z690 chipset.
