According to the following article, Intel has acknowledged its chipset contains a silicon error. (Meaning you can't just load a new driver to fix the problem)

http://business-video.tmcnet.com/news/2011/01/31/5278452.htm

Intel has stopped supplying the bad chipsets and has made changes to the silicon to correct the problem, then re-started production.

Is MSI going to recall the current P67-based motherboards to replace them with fixed chipsets?

Looks like two options:

Refund the purchase through your retailer.
or
Wait until April and MSI will replace the board.

Yes, but I thought, we had already established that:

MSI North America Responds to Intel 6 Series Chipset Issue With Replacement or Upgrades for Affected Units
Customers Can Register Online for Replacement of Affected P67 and H67 Motherboards Or Upgrade for Affected Notebook

City of Industry, CA ? February 3, 2011 ? MSI Computer Corp., a leading manufacturer of computer hardware products and solutions, today announced that it has stopped shipments in North America of Sandy Bridge products following Intel's announcement of a design issue in the recently released Intel? 6 Series chipset. The company is quickly responding to this issue by working with retailers, distributors and channel partners to stop all shipments, MSI is also offering end users replacements and upgrades for the affected motherboards and notebooks respectively at its Intel? 6 Series Motherboards and Notebook Support page: us.msi.com/snb_replacement

MSI North America takes the quality of its products and service to its customers very seriously, therefore the company is working closely with Intel to accept the return of Intel P67 and H67 motherboards, as well as its HM67 gaming laptops. MSI's All-in-One PCs based on the new generation of Intel Core i processors are not affected, and are still scheduled to launch in late March 2011.

MSI encourages end users who want to return their MSI Intel P67 and H67 motherboards or affected gaming notebooks, to contact the original place of purchase for more details on the return or refund policy. Alternatively, end users can register their Intel 6 Series notebook or motherboard with MSI by April 30, 2011 at us.msi.com/snb_replacement to be eligible for the following options.

  1. HM67 gaming notebooks: End users are eligible to receive an upgrade to MSI's next generation gaming notebook upon its availability.
  2. P67 and H67 motherboards: End users are eligible for a replacement with the new B3 stepping of the Intel 6 series motherboard when it is available in channel.
  3. Shipping: To make the replacement as smooth as possible, MSI will provide end users with a UPS 3 Day shipping label for returns, and will deliver the brand new item by UPS 3 Day shipping, both at no cost.

"MSI is wholly committed to both our customers and to the overall quality of our products," noted Andy Tung, vice president of North American sales for MSI. "While we work with Intel to resolve the chipset issues, we want to make sure our customers know their concerns are our top priority. We believe offering future replacement options will help alleviate some of the discomfort this issue has caused."

For questions regarding replacement of MSI Intel P67 or H67 motherboard and HM67 notebook, end users may contact MSI at SNB_Support@msi.com

This is 2011, cross shipments should be standard.  It's ridiculous that we have to be without a PC while the boards are sent back.  MSI has got to step up and take better care of their customers and early adopters (who are typically the most loyal customers).

Yes, this is 2011, but not all manufacturers do cross-shipping.  Many of the companies that do cross-shipping also sell directly to customers.  MSI does not.

hum... I would like to get a replacement for my P67 mobo (once available), however I have a little problem here: I don't live in the US, I live in Mexico kinda near the border
I purchased it through amazon, got it mailed into my business address in the US and then made the needed trip to get it

the round trip costs me around 100~130 dollars which I would need to do twice to get a replacement - one for shipping, one for getting the replacement - which I think beats the purpose as it is more than the price I paid for the mobo: is there anything MSI could do to help me with this? Maybe processing this through your Mexican channel?

Not good enough if they want to remain competitive in today's market.  And you can't tell me they don't ever do it as I currently have one coming to me and am sending mine back after I get it (they just needed my credit card).  This is a massive mess (regardless of where the blame lies) and when the dust settles it's all going to come down to how the various manufactures managed to handle users with the least amount of downtime.

FYI, MSI does sell directly to end-users, not every product, nonetheless, MSI does have the system in place to deal with cross-shipping: https://shop.msicomputer.com/App/StoreFront/StoreFront.aspx

It does not sell motherboards or video cards to end-users.  BTW, MSI is Global and I know the US branch does have an online shop for a few items, but in most other markets(which is larger than the USA), MSI does not sell directly.

This is going off topic.

Ask MSI, we (including forum admin. & mods) are users same as you and can't answer that question, that's between you and MSI and this forum has nothing to do with how MSI conducts their business.

This thread is about the recall, thus I posted my thoughts on what MSI could do to make the process easier on their customers.  I certainly don't expect anyone here (being a user run forum) to snap their fingers and make it happen, as I said, just posting my thoughts.  I hope my posts weren't coming off as being overly aggressive as that was not my intention.

For anyone interested in cross-shipment, MSI has informed me the registration page now offers "Advanced replacement" option.

This was just posted on the HardOCP forums:

Hey there - I'm the PR Manager from MSI - and wanted to shed some light on your concerns for cross-shipment.

We are currently offering a 3-day pre-paid shipping return label and taking care of shipping costs both ways.

There is no manufacturer currently offering cross-shipment for this issue, but we are actually looking into a solution to offer one. We have always went above and beyond to add value as to why people to should go with MSI, and our customer service rating (even on the BBB) is much higher than our competition.

As for the COST of all these replacements, I assure you Intel is not footing the complete bill. This affected a lot of business on the marketing efforts, PR efforts, etc. for not only us, but all our retail, etail, and channel business. We also learned about this the same day as the rest of the world!

I'll keep you guys updated on if we are able to implement cross-shipment.

Just shedding a little light for you.

he later followed up with this:

Hey no problem

I also have GREAT news - we have implemented a cross-shipping function for our P67 boards.

When you fill out the form, you should have an option that you can select and we will contact you once the necessary items are in stock.

We're always gonna make sure we hear you guys out.. and for those that use Facebook, you can always share and express your comments there - I handle it so I can get you answers you need right away. http;//www.facebook.com/Msicomputer.US

Or just shoot me a PM I'll get you an answer.

Thanks guys and hope this resolution works for you all.
