Is this a motherboard issue? (x58 Platinum)

I just bought a system with an MSI X58 Platinum mobo and a Core i7 920 CPU with 6GB of DDR3 RAM and a cheap 680w power supply. When I first got it several days ago, I noticed something weird. I plugged it in and pressed the power button. The PC powered up, immediately powered back off, paused for 4-5 seconds then booted up. I noticed it doing this from time to time. I thought the power supply was flaky, which seemed to be confirmed when it died last night after six days of use.

I put in a new Thermaltake Black Widow 850w power supply today and now my PC works again. However, the second time I booted up, it did that weird thing again. So, I know it's not the power supply. Is this a mother board issue? Anyone have any idea what my PC is doing? I've never seen one do that before.

EDIT: I just saw the sticky post about fake/double boots. That sounds a lot like what I'm experiencing. It freaks me out! I always think my system just died when that happens. Is there a good reason for this? I've never seen a system that behaves this way.

i believe this is one of ami bios features. also if you can check your bios and disable any auto reboot if you see one

Sup, get the latest MSI x 58 Beta bios. You can use SLI or non SLI doesn't make a difference. and overclock your cpu =p, i also have 6gb of ram 1333mhz, but my ram isn't that good so i'm stuck at a measly 4.0ghz 24/7 stable overclock. =\ i'm thinking of buying some 1600mhz 6gb get little more juice. BTW what video card do you have and could you run a GTA  4 benchmark cause i'm having some issuses in another thread.

I've got a GTX 260 Core 216 Superclocked Edition. It's basically halfway between a 260 and a 280. They should have just called it a 270. I don't have GTA4, though.

i'll be posting my OC specs real soon on this thread, i can't figure out why gTA iv is running like crap, and yes i know its bad port but i'm still suppose to be within my margin of fps. You plan to overclock right, hope your not using stock.

I tried overclocking a few days ago and it killed my power supply. Now that I have a new and improved power supply, I may attempt it.

Regardless, back to the topic at hand, I really wish this motherboard wouldn't scare the crap out of me by this auto rebooting stuff. I've never seen one do that before and I always think that my PC is about to crash.

What kind of memory modules are you using (brand/model name)? Can you post a link to the manufacturer's product site?

Get the new beta bios, if your auto rebooting sounds like you fault ram or something, this is the first i'm hearing about auto reboot what exactly is that.

I've never got that at all, and i'm using the 1.1 bios again just to try to resolve gta IV

So this is just a feature of the X58 chipset? It just seems like it wouldn't be good for the system to power up for moment, immediately power down, then power back up. It seems really strange.

*raises hand* msi x58 plat/sli owner here i don't know what you guys are talking about, Slow boot up time, i get about 1-2 second boot up time, i don't reboot or anything like that and i shut down instantly, really don't know what problem you guys are having.

It appears to be inherent in the X58 chipset, but it only occurs if you change certain parameters in the BIOS or if you unplug power from the power supply. When you reapply power, it does a quick double boot to do some sort of re-synchronization. That's all I know so far.

Ok i get what your talking about, its power related. Say you shut off the power supply then reapply it, it will automatically boot up. I don't understand how that bothers you =\ though.

I think were confused with each other again, That doesn't happen to me i have the same board as you. When i press power in windows i shut down that's it. If i press power during bios, it shut downs automatically, matter of fact i have no idea what the hell you talking about. Everything works great except gta iv.

It apparently only happens if you actually remove power from the PSU. The first time it boots it will do a double boot. This is apparently a known "feature" of several Intel chipsets. Lots of people have this problem, but I think it's by design. I've just never been around a computer that did it.
