Issues with MAG X870 Tomahawk

  • I just recently upgraded my rig with Tomahawk, 9850X3D and Kingston DDR5. After clean installation of the operating system and starting to use the new hardware, I have faced some issues that I never had before. The issues are:

1) The PC won't completely turn off when I shut it down. The monitors go black but lights stay on on the GPU and case fans.

2) During desktop use, my CPU temps are around 45 C which is ok. When gaming, the temps have been on average around 65 C, which is also ok. However, after I stop gaming and return to desktop, the gaming temps remain for as long as I shut down the PC. For example, if I quit the game to desktop and leave the pc on idle, the temperature won't drop but is still around 65 degrees, no matter how long I give the PC time to "cool down".

3) On couple of occasions, the CPU temps have remained at solid 45 C no matter what I have done - desktop or intensive gaming. I have checked the temperature on the onboard LCD display and using HWMonitor, and it is probably correct as on these occasions the fans have not increased their RPM like they usually do under load.

So far what I have tried to do is:
1. Disable fast startup in Windows - no effect.
2. Enable and disable ErP ready mode - no effect.
3. Updated BIOS and chipset drivers to latest - effortless installation but no effect on the problems.

What should I do? Is this just a driver/software related problem, or is there a chance the hardware is faulty?

It is the latest BIOS for MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI, you can test it.
However, we don't suggest you share it now and we suggest you first check if your former issue can be fixed. Thank you !

sorry, I can't properly test the BIOS because the error occurs very rarely for me. The last time it happened was on February 18, 2026.

Side note, I tried 2 hours of Extreme avx512 and it seemed good. Then tried Aida64 and temps froze only 1 minute, 40 seconds in. I'll try a reboot and rerun it and see if it behaves similarly. Currently no PBO enabled, or curve optimizer offsets.
Edit: Temp sensors froze again, this time even faster and at the 1 minute mark with Aida64. It seems I cant use that to stress test since itll jack up the sensors.

Ok, it can happen that in one attempt the problem doesn’t appear. Restart the computer and repeat the test (even half an hour is enough). If it doesn’t occur, restart and repeat it for another half hour. If it still doesn’t appear, it means the issue is 100% resolved.

Sadly I had to roll it back to A70. This A81 has the same problem A71 gives me where if I have my PCI/SAS card plugged in, the system hangs on code A0 for 2 minutes before posting. A70 and earlier it only sits on A0 for 10 seconds. Also the card shows up in the bios on A70. A71 and A81 don't list it.

Just thought to throw this out there...after you flash the bios, and reboot, then shut down, have you reset the CMOS by holding down the Clear CMOS button on the backplate for ~15 seconds (manual says 5 seconds, but I count to 15 just to be sure), then reboot back into the bios and manually set the system to your specs? I mention this because I have your motherboard, and I'm fortunately having none of these problems. Failing to reset CMOS by clearing it after each bios flash to a new version can definitely cause problems. I have no trouble with AIDA 64 Extreme, either. I would also try setting your RAM speed to the lowest possible speed to make sure that it's not your ram causing the problems. Good Luck! There are so many things that it could be that this is all I can think of at the moment...;)

Whatever that's supposed to mean?

BTW there's a new BIOS out - 7E51v1A80 (it's from Feb)
