I've had my K7T 266 Pro for about 7 months now. Its been running great. All of the sudden over the last few days, its been shutting down unexpectedly. I havent chaged anything, or added anything in about 4 months if not longer.

This morning I went to turn my PC on and the power wouldnt even come on. I unplugged the PS for 10 secs and tried again. The power came on, windows began to boot and BAM! power off! Just before it powered off, i heard this faint scratchy sound, like a wire brushing up against a fan.

I was able to reproduce this problem EvERY time I rebooted, tbu I never heard the noise when i was looking for it (kinda like when u bring yer car to the shop) It did sound like it came from the back of the PC. ONly thing thats there is my Vid card, Sound card, ethernet card and a case fan which is attached to the mobo.

Pretty much the pc shuts down completely every time I turn it on.
I even replaced the Power supply.. and it still does it..

what should I do?

here are my specs if they help!

2 x 256MB PC2100 Crucial DDR (total 512MB)
Visiontek 64MB AGP Geforce3 Ti500
AMD Althon XP 1900+ with heatsink and fan(used thermal grease)
400W power supply
Western Dig 40GB ata100/Western Dig 20GB ata 100
Cooler master case fan
Sound Blaster Live! PCI
MSI K7T266 PRO mobo

thanks so much!

OH, It does just reboot sometimes.. rather than just shutting down.. sometimes when it shuts down, i have to pull the power cord for 10 secs and plug it back in in order to get power

One last thing

if i go into BIOS.. the pc will stay on for hours. when i try to load OS, kapoot!

Please help, someone!

Hi there,

I'm thinking that your CPU cooler isn't mounted or cooloing the right way....

And because the CPU is idle in the BIOS it would stay on all the time, but when loading Windows it's doing lots of stuff, so it get's hot very fast....

Try setting the FSB at 100 and see if you can load the OS, if you can, remove the cooler, regrease it and put it on again....
But beware, there is ONLY 1 way to put it on, but you can mount it wrongly as the clips fit 2 way's.....
It also could be that your cooler is too small for the CPU....
