K8N Master C&Q fix for new CPU's when it doesn't work!

Hi dude's,

There are some older K8N Master boards that do not do C&Q properly with new CPU's.

Those boards need a rework.
If your board turns off when selecting Laptop or Minimal power option in Windows energy settings, then you have this problem.
You either RMA the board or when you know how to solder you can do it yourself.
If you solder nicely you won't lose warranty.
(Don't do this if you are not a sodering expert!!!!! then just RMA)

What you need to do is remove Q123 and Q124.

I will attach pictures so you know where they are.
If you don't care about Cool&Quiet, then don't bother.

BIOS 1.21 or later is required before you attempt this!

this fix is way beyond me.  how can I tell if I have one of these "old" MB's?  I am planning on moving to Vita and this Cool n Quiet issue seems a problem for some.  Planning on adding another Opteron 265 CPU and running Vista.

running fine now on XP-sp2

hello all, I spoke with MSI tech support in the U.S. regarding getting an RMA for my board with this problem and they claim no knowledge of this problem at all.  say they never heard of any issue with this board and this problem.  they say they will give me an RMA and see if they can "recreate the problem".  but this seems strange to me given the talk of people here and getting this resolved by MSI.

any idea why they say they never heard of this?  any info I can give them on this to show MSI (in Taiwan) of having known of this issue?

It could be that the person that you spoke to doesn't know about it.
Just show him the URL of the stickey, he can verify it with Taiwan or their FAE department.
Then it will get clear to him.
The info shown here in the forum is correct, be sure of that or I wouldn't have posted it.

I do not state anything like this unless I have got it confirmed!
Trust me, it's accurate, and they should know about it, unless this person isn't informed, such can happen.

thanks, not questioning the accuracy of the information here.  just confused why tech folks at msi wouldn't know about this.  will send them the URL.

hey, just wanted to thank you for the help here.  I got my board back from MSI and not it works great with 2x 265 Opteron CPU's with BIOS v1.3 and is working great with MS Vista.

FYI, if you guys are sending your board in to MSI, I strongly suggest calling their tech support FIRST instead of filling out the online forms. 

MSI sent my board back with no work the first time and I had to talk to them over the phone to get them to understand and recognize the problem and add special instructions to the RMA forms. 

Also, thank you for this thread.  This board never performed as MSI claimed it would, but it is nice to see at least 1 overclocking feature is now available.  How about some vcore support now?

Hello, if I do the c&q fix and update the to the latest bios will I be able to up the vcore through the mb bios. Also, I have two cpu's installed will I be able to up the vcore on both cpu's installed or just the primary cpu.  The Reason I am asking is because I have been using the 1.5 volt pin mod for the last year or so and I think cpus are starting to degrade in life crashing constantly was hitting 3.2ghz on water now only 2.9ghz . Thanks
