I just picked this motherboard up from my uncle. I gave it to him about 10-12 yrs ago. Installed a couple quad core opterons and 8X 2GB sticks of ram. He said it was working fine till about a month ago. The system stopped showing the full ram capacity. Now it is only showing 4gb. I swapped the sticks around. No change. I removed CPU-1. No change. Pulled all sticks but 2 for the CPU-0 socket. Shows correctly as 4gb. I add 1 stick, still showing 4gb. Add another, still showing 4gb. Swapped all ram around again. Tested all the sticks. All passed. Swapped processors. No change. I put in an old dual core CPU I had laying around. Made no difference in the available ram. Swapped the power supply. No change. And yes, after every change, I reset the bios.
Any ideas?

Personally, I've never heard of such an weird issue. Looking at schematics it looks like RAM is connected directly to the CPU, so it might have been memory controller in CPU, but you already crossed that out. Nevertheless I would try updating the BIOS and look around for damaged traces or bad caps.

Well, I pulled out my old MS-9652. Moved all the parts over to it. Works perfectly. All 16gb ram recognized. Both processors working. I moved all the parts from the MS-9652 to the MS-9661. My old dual core and all 16gb ram working perfectly. I replaced the dual cores with the quad cores. Working perfectly. All 16gb working. I moved all the ram back from the MS-9652 to the MS-9661 and only 4gb showing. hmmm. Board inspected carefully with my 10X magnifier glasses. (doctor glasses with LED lights). Everything looks good.
MS-9661 with quads showing 4gb
MS-9652 with same quads showing 16gb
MS-9661 with dual core showing 16gb
MS-9652 with dual core showing 16gb.

The bios on MSI's website shows v2.00. The bios installed is v2.10. If I remember correctly, the 2.10 is to give some support to Istanbul (6-core). I asked my uncle and he said he originally installed a pair of Istanbul CPU's. Removed them because his son-in-law needed a pair for a supermicro. So they traded. But said the Istanbul processors worked well.

Honestly this gets just weirder and weirder. My first thought was that 2 and 4 core cpus have different pinouts for RAM, but thats impossible. If the memory and CPU works in the other board I would assume that they are not faulty. But if I recall correctly MSI has had some problems with quality of their VRMs, for example my MSI K7 Pro, or lower end AMD 970 boards, so it's just a random guess, but maybe power delivery has degraded since it works with lower power CPUs?

I'm confused as well.. So, this morning I ordered another pair of quads. 2350's
Also, just in case.. Where can I get the v2.10 bios flash to reflash since the MSI website only shows 2.0?

Got 2 sets of processors. Another set of 2350 and my uncle sent me those 6-core processors.
The new 2350's work with all 16gb showing.
Then I tested the 6-cores. Also working fine showing all 16gb.
Reinstalled the original set of quads. Only showing 4gb.. I'm thinking it's something in those old quads.
So I reinstalled the 6-core (2431).
Installed win7 x64 and a AMD V5900 Firepro. Working well..

Glad everything works now. Probably the on-chip memory controller has degraded.
