Keyboard keys not responsive - GE66 Raider

About two months ago, very soon after I got my laptop back from another RMA repair (detached hinge), a few keys on the keyboard stopped responding. Initially it was just the Q and R keys, but it has since spread to the D key as well as the W and E keys being only intermittently responsive. The keyboard lights still work normally. Apparently this is not an extremely uncommon problem, a quick search on the r/MSILaptops subreddit found at least 4 others with the same Q and R key problems, but no solutions.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers and testing in safe mode, but no results so far. If anyone is familiar with this issue or has any other ideas I would really appreciate it. My warranty expired right after the last RMA, otherwise I would just send it back in. Thanks!

I am having this same issue. My R key is unresponsive most of the time. Even tying to type this that key is not cooperating.
EDIT: Just discovered that if I hold a separate key, like shift or "e", then the "R" key will respond. What is going on?

If you have already sent the laptop to MSI service center to repair, I recommend you try to connect MSI service center directly and ask them to check for you again. It might be related to the hardware issue.

You can go to BIOS mode and type the key in "Set user password". It is easy to recognize if the problem is related to the software or the hardware. If the key still not response in BIOS mode, it is more like the hardware issue.

I'm not entirely sure it's a hardware issue. I updated my BIOS, EC firmware, IME firmware, etc. Rebooted and everything seemed to be working fine. Then just today, I was using Adobe Illustrator and the r key flaked out on me. I went to the internet to start searching and the r key wouldn't work in Chrome or Edge. I was about to restart my computer I go to BIOS to do what you suggested; but I needed to make a note for something. After I had closed everything (folders, Adobe, Edge, etc), I opened Word and typed something and the r key was working fine. Even now as I am typing this, the r key is working fine. But I have no idea when it will flake out on me again.

It seems it is more like the hardware issue. I recommend you go to MSI service center and ask the technician to check for you.

I think you may be right. When the r key wasn't working, I went into BIOS and did the passwod thing. It didn't work there either. Even now it is hit/miss. I guess I need to replace the keyboard? Very frustrating.
Weird thing I noticed. If I try to press the 'r' key by itself, I can't get it to register. But tapping it at the same time as another key makes it register. So pressing 'er' keys at the same time gets it to show up. Still...very frustrating.

I'm sorry to bring this back up again, but I don't think it's completely hardware. If I press the R and D keys together, I can get an R to show up. Otherwise, if I just press the R key, it will not register. If I press and hold Q and R together for a few seconds, Q and R will show up and then I can use the R key normally until I stop typing where I need R for a number of seconds. So it's like the R key will hibernate until I wake it up by pressing Q and R together, or by pressing R and D together. If it was entirely hardware, I don't think the R key would work at all.
I read some other places that the SCM utility might not be working properly, but I have a 10th Gen i7 processor and Windows 11 and read that SCM was replaced with Dragon Center. However, I'm afraid to uninstall Dragon Center for fear of something messing up.
Please help!

Also just discovered something very weird. I went into Dragon Center and toggled the Windows switch key for the Fn key to be left and Windows key to be right and that seems to have fixed my issue. Now the q and r keys are working fine [for now]. I feel like this is a bug that MSI should be aware of and provide a fix for.

I am having this same issue. Very frustrating of course. I bought a new keyboard from a third party only to find that the keyboard is plastic welded onto the palm rest (upper chassis) and is not replaceable without replacing the entire thing. I have reached out to support for the part number information, but if anyone has the part number(s), I would be appreciative. MSI will not sell me the part directly, so I have to find the part number so I can get it through a third party.

I confirm the behavior as described by others though. The Q and R keys will not work. Interestingly enough, to piggyback on the pressing multiple buttons at once possibly conversation, the capital Q and R always work. If I hold shift, the letters always type. Once I get the keys "working" they tend to work fine for a little bit before no longer registering without pressing shift again. So, it is the lowercase q and r specifically that tend to stop working. I feel like it is a firmware or software issue more than a hardware issue, but only because of the rather specific behavior pattern. I mean, if the physical keys were bad, it would mean that the capital Q and R would not work reliably either, but those never fail. Again, it might just be because of the multiple keys pressed based on the input from others here.

I am also having the same problem with a unresponsive R key. I have tried all the listed solutions above and noting is working. I also believe my E key is going out next. If anyone has any tips or ideas let me know please.

Adding on to this, my Q key does not work aswell. Holding a second key also does not make the keys work as others have had work for them.

I am having what is even worse than the issue with the r and q key. My GE66 raider was working fine for a month and a half and then recently my keys will randomly not work and then a random thing like what will be displayed in the quotes will occur "helloyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy". I've so far tried uninstalling the keyboards through device manager and it has not changed a thing. Will try other methods to see if anything changes the situation

Did you try to go to BIOS mode (User password) to check?
It can help you to recognize if the problem is related to the software or hardware.

Just wanted to add that my fix was only temporary. My q and r keys are now flaking out again. Occasionally they will work, but I'm mostly back to using a Bluetooth keyboard because it is so incredibly annoying. I love the computer except for the keyboard. And I don't want to justify spending the money for a new computer just for the keyboard. MSI definitely needs to do something about it as this is NOT a normal wear and tear issue.
Is there any way we can get this elevated?

I submitted a web ticket this morning. My warranty expired back in January, but it's only been the last few months that this issue has occurred. I really hope MSI does something to honor this issue. I'm not asking for a new laptop, but a repair or compensation for repair or even a credit towards a new laptop would be fair, I believe. Especially since this is not a normal wear and tear issue.
I would advise others to put in a web ticket as well. If they get enough of them from others, maybe they'll act on it.

So I submitted a web ticket and I was advised to do an EC reset. It seemed to work for about 20 seconds and now on to the same problems. I was then told I'd have to pay for out of pocket service. I gotta say, I'm not really interested in another MSI computer. I understand this is a business, but when you have MULTIPLE users with the same problem, I feel the company should honor a bad product. It's not like the keys wore out by one person. When you have a lot of users with the same problem, it's not a normal wear and tear issue. Very sad.

As someone who has a GE66 Raider....can't say I've encountered this.
Just because multiple people ecounter a similar problem doesn't automatically make something a bad product. If that was the case, every product ever made would be considered a bad product. Defects happen.

Personally, when you buy an MSI, or a Gigabyte, or honestly, even an Asus laptop, I don't expect any support at all. It's cheaper for a reason. MSI isn't Alienware or Dell or HP, where the laptop with the same/similar specs costs a good $1000 more in many cases. You get what you pay for.

In this case, I probably would have gone to Ebay and just bought another keyboard to replace it for relatively cheap.
Sucks to pay a decent bit, but it would most likely solve the issue and $60 or $70 to fix the problem is probably cheaper than sending it back to MSI overall.

That being said, if it's under warranty yet, I won't deny that MSI should honor it.
I'm just saying that from my own personal experience.....I wouldn't expect it to get resolved easily.
