Hello, I'm French and I translate via google (if you ever don't understand something, it can come from there.
I bought a B660M-A wifi motherboard.
I added it to my old config.
Since then, my keyboard is not recognized at startup. If I unplug it and plug it back in (running), this time if it works. But it's not practical at all suddenly I would like to find the reason.
If I plug my keyboard into the front panel (and therefore not plugged directly into the usb sockets on the card) it starts fine with the computer.
On the other hand, this bug is present on all the usb sockets of the motherboard.
Do you have an idea of the problem please?

1) Update BIOS to the latest version.

Update how-to:
1) Get the latest BIOS. It's the topmost one on the MSI support page for your board, https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/PRO-B660M-A-WIFI-DDR4/support (i assume you have the DDR4 version).
2) Extract the file and you will get a text file and the BIOS file. Put the BIOS file into the root folder of a USB stick/drive.
3) Enter the BIOS by pressing DEL during boot, go to "M-FLASH" in the BIOS.
4) Once M-Flash (the updater) is loaded, it will show a list of your drives. Select the USB stick and select the previously extracted BIOS file on there.
5) It will ask for confirmation and then update the BIOS. It's fully automatic from there, takes about two minutes.

2) After the update, enter the BIOS, switch to Advanced View (F7), go to "Settings\Boot" and disable "MSI Fast Boot" and "Fast Boot". Also, enable XMP for your RAM. Press F10 to save and exit.
Then see if the problem is fixed.

Thanks, elexo154f02da, I will try that, could be a solution for now. There is definitely some relation with the fact that the motherboard offers a PS2 connection for keyboard. Somehow when it boots it tries to find a PS2 keyboard but if only an USB keyboard is connected then it does not immediately revert to it. I noticed if I unplug and plug it back again, it works on that moment though the same will happen during next boot. I hope this is something MSI could fix with a BIOS update in the future.

Hi .. I have the exact same problem .. My keyboard is a Ducky One 2 mini. I am using the latest bios ( 7D43v17 ) and about 50% of the times i boot my pc the keyboard is not recognized/powered.. Also, I am using the cpu integrated graphics and using the motherboard's displayport ..and sometimes on boot i have no image on my monitor .. i have to press reset on the pc.
I tried to register the product but i can't find the CHK code anywhere on the top/front side of the motherboard ..Is it located on the back ? .. What kind of horrible person would do that to the users ? I'd have to disassembly the motherboard from the PC's case so that i could check that code .. really?

Update: I finally bought a PS/2 adapter for my keyboard and it appears to make no difference. It is even worse, the PS/2 port doesn't work at all. It turns on my keyboard lights but does not recongnize the keyboard. Seriously, MSI has to do something about this. A motherboard does not recognize keyboard unless you reboot or plug it again and it happens on all boards of the same model? This is no Windows issue BTW, it has the same behaviour at the BIOS screen. There has to be a bios update to resolve, anyone knows when it is coming?

Do you by chance have a second USB keyboard you could try just a chep old MS one will do and see if same thing happens

Hi, I'm here to report the same issue, with the same motherboard (msi pro B660-A DDR4). When starting up from a cold boot my (mechanical) keyboard is not recognized by the motherboard, not in the OS, nor in the BIOS. Only after re-plugging in the keyboard does it light up and work again. The keyboard keeps working after resuming from Sleep (windows 10), after a reboot through the OS, and after a reboot through the BIOS.

A simple Dell keyboard does not share these issues, it works every boot. So the issue is with my mechanical keyboard. I checked the USB settings in the bios (Settings/Advanced/USB Configuration), and it lists the USB Devices recognized at boot. With my mouse and mechanical keyboard plugged in a cold boot lists the following devices: "1 Mouse, 1 Hub". After re-plugging the keyboard and a warm reboot this lists, with the same devices: "2 Keyboards, 1 Mouse, 1 Hub". With the Dell keyboard and the mouse it lists: "1 Keyboard, 1 Mouse, 1 Hub". The Hub I couldn't place, it didn't go away even if I only plugged in the mouse or the Dell keyboard. I can only assume it is the front io panel of my case.

The mechanical keyboard that I use (and doesn't work at cold boot) is the LEOPOLD FC900R PD Gary/Blue. During this process I found out that it can switch between 6-key rollover and N-key rollover with a key combination. The internet told me that these keyboards circumvent the usb protocol limitation of a maximum of 6 concurrent keypresses by presenting itself as an USB-hub with multiple keyboards attached. This explains to me the 2 keyboards recognized by the BIOS while only having plugged in one (mechanical) keyboard. (But the hub isn't recognized as well?)

So my best guess it this bug has something to do with the fact that the mechanical keyboard presents itself as multiple keyboards. Strangely enough the 6-key rollover mode is supposed to be for compatibility sake, but even in that mode it presents itself as 2 keyboards.

Same problem exist on my z790 Tomahawk Max WiFi. I have a Microsoft keyboard and %60-70 not work after boot. If I unplug and plug it back again, it works sometimes. Or put different usb ports. I’m crazy about this problem 😡 I have a latest fw also.

MPG Z490 GAMING EDGE WIFI (MS-7C79)
Came here to say the same thing. I have never had this "issue" before on an Asrock B460 Steel Legend motherboard and this keyboard (EVGA Z12). I have had this keyboard for over a year and it's never done this. Got a Z490 board from MSI and not always, but many times after booting from cold my keyboard is lit, but the keypresses do not register in Windows until I unplug the keyboard and plug it back in. I have swapped USB ports, but that does not resolve it.

Hi everyone! I see this topic had been opened in 2022, but it has had responses in 2024 about the same symptoms with other motherboards.

As a long-time MSI user (oldest motherboard still in use is a P45T-C51 :woohoo:but there have been others since, and I haven't had such issues before), here the described symptoms occur with a MSI PRO B760-P DDR4 II (latest BIOS) and a wired USB CHERRY keyboard. Doing a cold boot, the USB keyboard isn't active and therefore cannot be used in the boot manager or when entering a post-boot OS level passphrase to unlock an encrypted filesystem. I've tried the back panel USB 2.0 Type-A ports, and plugging out and back in makes the keyboard work e.g. while viewing the boot manager.

The better work-around I've found is to connect the keyboard to one of the JUSB4~5 USB 2.0 connectors via a tower front panel. Those are not affected by the same symptoms.

Just came to say I'm getting this on a new MSI X870E Carbon with 9950X3D on it. Latest BIOS and I'm using the front panel via internal USB motherboard header. I'm quite confident this is an MSI BIOS problem rather than a software problem. It's happened to both my keyboard and my mouse if I recall correctly. That is a Logitech G915TK keyboard and a Logitech G305 mouse.
