KVM between DPS and Type C

As the title indicates, my problem stems from using a KVM switch between the DisplayPort and USB-C ports. I use the DisplayPort for a desktop computer and the USB-C port for my laptop. The keyboard and mouse are plugged directly into the monitor. Everything works fine on the desktop, and I also have a USB-B cable connected to the desktop. The problem is that when I plug in the laptop via USB-C, I have to manually switch from DisplayPort to USB-C on the monitor (which seems normal), but when I switch to USB-C, the keyboard and mouse don't follow suit. I also have to manually switch the KVM switch to USB-C on the monitor. I can't understand how the KVM switch works.

Okay... to switch between PCs, you have to perform two steps: first, change the input source, and then change the KVM switch, right?
