Laptop thinks it's closing, shutting off

A few months ago, I purchased a GF65 Thin 9SEXR. It has been performing wonderfully up until recently, where the slightest adjustment of the screen causes it to go into sleep mode, forcing me to power it back on. After reading many posts on other forums, I figured out via the event log that the machine did in fact think it was closing, putting it into sleep mode as a result. Many of the posts suggested changing my settings as to prevent it from turning off when "closed," but I would rather resolve the issue outright, and, for what it's worth, I cannot for the death of me get it to stop sleeping when "closed," and suspect some third-party software of overriding my power settings, though that's beside the point. Though I believe this to be in part a hardware problem, it began pretty much exactly when I installed an update for Windows, of which I do not remember the details. I would rather not make use of my warranty and send it in, as I use this laptop for everything from school to communicating with friends, and would like to know if there's something I could do to resolve this. I consider myself somewhat tech-savvy, and have some experience tinkering and fixing electronics, though I'd rather not risk damaging my laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you saying that you click the laptop into sleep mode but the laptop shuts down?
What is the power LED status when your laptop in sleep mode?
I suggest you update the Windows OS, BIOS, and EC firmware to the latest version.
You can find the BIOS and EC firmware under the below website.

A little bit of an update here, I found out that, having set my computer to never sleep upon being closed, it actually does not do so when I close it for real, leading me to believe the state it's entering when I move the screen is not "sleep." To answer your question, The screen goes black, and, after a few seconds, the keyboard lights turn off any the power button pulses white, continuing to do so until I press it, prompting me to the log-in screen. Upon signing in my computer is exactly as it was when it "shut off." As far as the BIOs goes, the thought had crossed my mind, but I was having trouble registering my device for MSI support and whatnot. But I will definitely try the update you suggested. Thanks for the response!

Even having updated my BIOs, EC firmware and all drivers, the problem persists. I've been using the laptop on a desk recently, and as such it has become less noticeable, but I still can't adjust my screen without fear of it turning off. I really want to make sure this isn't something I could resolve before I try and get it repaired, as a week or so without it would be difficult considering how much I use it for. Again, any response would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

What is the laptop Windows OS now?
Try to update the Windows OS to no more update files.

Maybe you could try MSI F3 recovery function and contact MSI technical support to seek assistance at the same time.

I notice this was never answered any more than was discussed, but assuming that you were having the same problem as me, then it is likely that when you close the lid of the laptop it causes the power button to be depressed. I have been dealing with this issue and noticed that, as you did, changing the setting for when the laptop closes was ineffective. However, by changing the power button to do nothing, when closing my laptop I no longer encountered this issue. My hunch is that there was a spring holding this button with more force that may have gotten displaced at some point during transit. Hope this helps if you still have this problem. I am trying to find a way to fix this button now.

EDIT: Shortly after making this post, I discovered a missing screw directly below the power button. Putting a temporary screw in its place has fixed the problem. Now I just need to find a replacement screw so that I don't need to move one from another part of the frame.

Hi, I had the same exact problem where my laptop would randomly go to sleep mode after I hardly touch the monitor. Sometimes, just carrying the laptop over to another room would cause it to go to sleep mode.

Then I read the post from above about the missing screw. Guess what ? There was a missing screw right under the power on button as well 🤔. For some reasons, a few other screws were already gone too

Out of luck, I found a replacement screw as well and the issue is now gone.
