M.2_1 Slot not recognicing my SSD NVME

Hi everyone,

I've been troubleshooting an issue with my system, but despite several attempts, I can't seem to find the solution. I'm considering initiating an RMA for my motherboard.

The problem I'm encountering is that my BIOS frequently fails to recognize my boot drive, a Samsung SSD 980 Pro NVMe. Every other boot, my system ends up in the BIOS instead of Windows. The BIOS doesn't detect my boot drive during these instances. However, after multiple shutdowns and attempts, it eventually boots into Windows. The cycle then repeats itself. Sometimes it boots directly into Windows, while other times it circles through the BIOS several times before booting.

I encounter a particularly problematic situation when the PC enters sleep mode. Upon waking from sleep, I consistently encounter a Windows blue screen.

Interestingly, the SSD functions perfectly in the M.2_2 and M.2_3 slots, and sleep mode operates without issues in these slots. The problem specifically seems to be with the M.2_1 slot.

Could this issue be related to the BIOS, motherboard, or CPU? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

The SATA SSD are allways beeing recogniced without problems.

Hi there,
there is a big problem with MSI boards not recognizing the NVMe drive in slot M2_1 or slot M2_2 especially Samsung 990 PROs and 980 PROs.
here are 2 links where this is discussed:

and

Other boards are affected too, and not only with Samsung drives.
We are all awaiting a miraculous BIOS update to fix this.

Allright thank you. So it is just a software issue and not a hardware one? It is just weard, that it recognices it a third of the time I boot the system.

I think it is a bios problem, I also think it is a Samsung problem they have a long history of issues on the AMD platform.

You should try to:
1 - get this bios version AMI BIOS Version: 7D74v16 from release date: 2023-08-14 with File Size: 9.24 MB
2 - update to latest amd chipset drivers
3 - update firmware on all your Samsung SSD's to the latest if they are not up to date yet from the samsung ssd program
4 - read that one user solved his issues with setting all M2 slots manually to PCIe 4.0 from bios

If all this fails and you are in return window then maybe you use it and get new SSDs or jump on another platform.
Plus this is for that famous Samsung SSD reliability, that was a thing 10 years ago but not today:

As you have the MPG B650 CARBON WIFI mobo (same as me), I wonder why haven't you tried to insert your M.2 drive into the M2_4 slot? Btw, the M2_2 and M2_3 slots share bandwidth with your main PCIe x16 slot (your graphics card), lowering it to x8 instead of x16. This is highlighted even in the user manual multiple times. However, M2_4 is still Gen 4, and although it comes from the chipset, it doesn't share bandwidth with other stuff.

My situation is somewhat similar, but I have two SSDs and two HDDs, and occasionally I also have problems with one of the drives.

My two SSDs:
  1. 1. Crucial P5 Plus - boot drive with Win11 - in M2_4
    2. WD Black SN850X - non-boot drive, only for games - in M2_1

The Crucial drive is ALWAYS recognised, but sometimes the WD SN850X is not recognised, and needs a reboot.

A recommendation from another user, which mentions going into the BIOS and manually setting the SSD Gens for your M.2 drives from Auto to the actual Gen, improved the situation.

I'm using BIOS 7D74v19 (latest non-beta BIOS).

Most people who have M.2 problems have mostly Samsung or WD drives. I wonder what would happen if I would replace my WD drive with something else, e.g. the Crucial T500 which is similar to the WD SN850X.

PCIe Gen 5 x8 == PCI Gen4 x16 speeds, most GPUs are Gen4 so you lose nothing. If you look at the throughput math for Gen5 and Gen4. If you had a PCI Gen5 GPU then you'd be correct but no one has a Gen5 GPU.
