Hi,

I was reading online there are some issues with the Phison E18 controller and there have been firmware updates for the controller, has MSI released any firmware updates for this nvme drive?

Solution
Update:
New FW updater is ready.
Things to note before doing the update:
  • * Back up important data from the target M.2 SSD
  • * M.2 SSD must be installed to M.2 slot directly without any adapter
  • * Unzip the file and confirm both file is in the folder:
A. [MSI]M480 SSD update tool.exe
B. pcie_dll.dll

To proceed:
- Run M480 SSD update tool.exe with admin privilege
- Confirm target SSD is recognized by tool
- Run the update tool
- Restart PC

Result:
[Pass] tool will show “firmware download success”
[Fail] tool will show “firmware not support”
If SSD FW version is up to...

were you able to get an answer to your query\

Got the reply, had to wait on the Chip supplier to respond.

It seemed the the issue was reported on E18 + Micron B47R flash SSD and not the E18 + Kioxia BiCS5 flash SSD that MSI uses.

There is no firmware update required for the Kioxia flash that is used by MSI on the M.2 to address any issue.

Hi.

I have two M480 Pro 2TB drives — one with firmware EIFM31.6, and the other with EIFM51.3.
Using the Phison NVMe Flash ID2 utility, I found that the drive with EIFM31.6 uses Micron 176-layer (B47R) NAND, while the one with EIFM51.3 uses Toshiba 112-layer BiCS5.

Based on the recent reports, does this mean the first drive might be affected by the degradation issue?

I have a m480 pro with Micron 176L with EIFM31.6, which is same as reviewed on techpowerup

I never knew MSI used two different nand suppliers for the same product name, when you use two different nand suppliers from different generations that have different performance, endurance and temperature characteristics shouldnt be used on the within the same product name that is sent to reviewers. I really dont like when companies do this, I'm happy that i got the 176L nand version, but in the future, i guess I have to check what I receive and not just trust the company.

Since my M480 Pro 2TB has Micron B47R 176-Layer 3D TLC NAND, does MSI plan to follow up with a firmware update?

Hi there! I have the M480 Pro 4TB with firmware EIFM51.3 + Toshiba 112L BiCS5 NAND. Is there any news on a firmware update yet?

In addition to the M480 Pro, I own several other Phison-based drives: Kingston Fury Renegade and KC3000 (both E18), Crucial P3 and P3 Plus (E21T, also affected), Corsair MP600 Pro XT (E18), and Seagate FireCuda 530 (E18). So far, only the Kingston and Crucial drives have received firmware updates since this issue was brought to their attention, back in 2023.

It seems more users are only now becoming aware of the problem, likely because the degradation takes time to manifest. Hopefully, we'll see a firmware update for the MSI drives soon.

MSI now have the firmware in hand, but at present is in-house only.
MSI do plan to include it with MSI-Centre as an update in the future.
If you believe your Drive needs the updated urgently, you can for now arrange an RMA and it will be flashed in-house and returned to you.

Hi Guys, slight change of plans

The M.2 Firmware will be released to the MSI website as a standalone update tool, with no need for MSI Centre

ETA is around the last week of this month

MSI requests you not to RMA at this time, but wait for the Release of the Firmware tool

Once released, you should be able to find it here
I will update this link if necessary

Finally, glad to see some movement on this, I have two MSI M480 Pro 2TB SSDs I have been waiting for this update since I saw the write degradation issue 7 months ago, I'm on firmware EIFM80.0, I've read that EIFM80.1 should fix the issue.

Will be following on this thread, hope MSI delivers.
