Hi,

I was reading online there are some issues with the Phison E18 controller and there have been firmware updates for the controller, has MSI released any firmware updates for this nvme drive?

Solution
Update:
New FW updater is ready.
Things to note before doing the update:
  • * Back up important data from the target M.2 SSD
  • * M.2 SSD must be installed to M.2 slot directly without any adapter
  • * Unzip the file and confirm both file is in the folder:
A. [MSI]M480 SSD update tool.exe
B. pcie_dll.dll

To proceed:
- Run M480 SSD update tool.exe with admin privilege
- Confirm target SSD is recognized by tool
- Run the update tool
- Restart PC

Result:
[Pass] tool will show “firmware download success”
[Fail] tool will show “firmware not support”
If SSD FW version is up to...
For those who has upgraded before, do they need to use the new firmware you've publicly shared to update again?
No, the new one now includes the M.2 that were not getting detected correctly, like some PRO M.2 and earlier M.2 drives

Microsoft Defender Keeps flagging the zip and deleting it.

Add it to ignore/exception list (as Alan suggested)

The firmware has been successfully updated to EIFM 31.7. Do I need to do a secure erase of the SSD after the firmware update?

Not necessary.

@Svet For those who has upgraded before, do they need to use the new firmware you've publicly shared to update again?

Nope, but if you try it, it should said that's already up to date.

Controller : E18 + Micron flash : B27B / B47R
FW version: EIFM21.1, EIFM31.6 or older

Hi, I bought a m480 pro 1tb with EIFM31.6 firmware and a Micron 176-layer 3D TLC NAND. How likely is it that I will encounter the same problem? Or should I not wait and immediately update to EIFM31.7? Am I understanding correctly that this firmware is suitable for me? And is there a possibility of something going wrong, and how safe is it?

In my opinion yes.

Am I understanding correctly that this firmware is suitable for me?

Based on those details it should be. However when try to flash the flash tool will determine this.

And is there a possibility of something going wrong

When flashing firmware something to go wrong always exist.

and how safe is it?

No guarantees. Use at own risk,
and make a backup on important to you data from the disk (as already said) before proceed.

Thank you very much! Everything went well, and the firmware has been updated.

So then what happens when the percentage used hits 100%? Do I just let it be? Or does this drive lock down any future writes like some more enterprise SSDs do? I'm aware the rated TBW is 600 for this drive, so 33.7TBW should not be enough to use 45% of the media.
Can you provide a screenshot with Crystal Disk Info

Set RAW values to DEC 190 in the functions

Hello, Svet! I have M480 PRO 4Gb, firmware EIFM51.3. I did not figure out from the forum thread whether I need to flash 80+ for a better result.
EIFM31.7 not installed, does not support my flash... And if it's better to flash 80+, then can I get it? Thanks!

the base class much match the numbers to new FW to be compatible.
Example of main:
EIFM21.1, EIFM31.6

etc:
if existing FW is 21.xx => your new FW must be also 21.xx /any other 3x.xx, 50xx, 80xx are not for you SSD/

So you can't flash from 50.xx to 80.xx without bricking.
The main base class should always match.
