[MAG B550M Mortar Wifi] CPU fan value is missing (0 RPM in UEFI)

Hello,

I own a B550M mortar wifi and I noticed since few weeks that in HWmonitor the line for CPU fan is missing, when I go to UEFI, it mention 0 RPM whereas my cpu cooler is working well (fan speed is ok).
I already tried to shut down computer and remove/replug the cpu fan but it does nothing..

Another thing, when I set in UEFI that I want the case fans (on fan_3) to turn according to the temperature of PCI instead of CPU temperature, it doesn't work and the case fans don't accelerate when the GPU temperature increase..

Thank's

Ok, nothing sticks out from your hardware. Try HWinfo64 Sensors if that can read it out, it's superior to HWMonitor anyway.
If it can't read out the sensor either, try a Clear CMOS (bridging two pins with a screwdriver to reset the BIOS settings, see manual).

As for the BIOS, MSI doesn't have an option to react to the GPU temperature. Only CPU, MOS (MOSFETs = CPU VRM) or System temperature. See my Guide: How to set up a fan curve in the BIOS.

Thank's, I installed HWinfo.
In the app, the cpu_fan is missing to

For the clear cmos, can I go to the bios and clic on "restore manufacturer defaut" (don't know the exact name in english^^) or is it better to make a contact with a screwdriver ?

In the harware monitor for my motherboard, I have the option "PCIE" as temperature source, I thought it was for the GPU maybe ?

It's better to do a full Clear CMOS by bridging the two pins.

Oh cool, i didn't know that some boards offer a PCIe temperature sensor as the source. But i think that's an internal temperature sensor, meaning a small sensor next to the PCIe slot, not the GPU temperature sensor. You can try playing a game and then ALT-TAB to HWinfo64 to check the PCIE_1 sensor reading in there. If it's really the GPU sensor, it should rise very quickly.

Okay, I've done the clear cmos with screwdriver, everything was back to defaut settings but it did not help, cpu_fan is still missing.
In hwinfo, when I put mouse on pcie_1 sensor, it indicates that this is the temperature near the pci-ex slot as you mentionned^^

Ok, Clear CMOS was worth a try.

Can you put the CPU fan on PUMP_FAN? It's on the top right, next to the RAM slots. If the RPM can be read out there, i would just leave it on the PUMP header.

Also, looking at your fan curve picture, you basically made a straight line. I would do a curve that goes upwards more, see my fan curve thread that i linked.

Yes, I can put the CPU fan on Pump _fan, but in my case it's a bit difficult to access cpu_fan with my fingers and maybe a newer bios (when released) may resolve this problem, if I plug the cpu_fan on pump_fan I should not be able to see if the disappearance of cpu_fan values is fixed.

I looked at your topic I think I will do some changes in the fan curve, thank's.

Can you installs Center and check for Firmware LED update
This also monitors fan speed and other stuff.

Your board should be on version 6 or so from memory

Hello,
On MSI center, CPU_FAN RPM is not indicated (only percentage)
The FW LED is in version 03. The app seems up to date^^
And it should show Fan speed in RPM as well

One on left is my system one on n Right is your screen shot

Thanks Alan, didn't knew I could update the LED firmware by this way.
I do advanced scan and it find a 06 version. I'ill do it soon and add a reply. Edit : not at home at this time^^

Hello,

The FW update is done to version 06 but cpu_fan is still missing at this time
OK so is it the fan or the Board, can you place a different fan on the CPU header and put the CPU fan on the pump or a system fan header and see what the results are, if still no reading on the one on the CPU header and the CPU fan on the System header or pump header gives you a reading I would suggest you RMA the board, but if fan on the Pump of system headed still gives no reading I would say bad fan signal sender and you will have to RMA or replace the CPU cooler fan.

Thank's for your answer, I may try this. (not easy to access cpu_fan header on the case "In Win 101C" with big cpu cooler^^)
It's not the first time cpu_fan disappear, last time it was back after some time.
I think I'll add a second fan to cpu cooler (Dark rock 4) and when I do this, I'll put original fan on pump and the second fan on cpu_fan.

Re,

I motivated myself to do a test and the result is that the fan of cpu cooler doesn't work correctly.

If I put the cpu-cooler fan on pump, I have no value of RPM also (0RPM in bios, and it appears as "disconnected" in the board explorer under the bios, when on cpu_fan & on pump) and on the other side, the other fan I installed in cpu_fan have value^^

Motherboard is ok :christmas:O0

Notwithstanding @citay 's and @Alan J T 's advice, which is absolutely solid, I'll just add that I have two Asus TUF B350-M-PLUS GAMING motherboards and whenever I tried to use a be quiet! PWM fan on the CPU_FAN header, I'd get crazy speed indications - say 16,000 revs (yes, sixteen thousand) or 0, just like you. Any other fan I hooked up, for example a Noctua, Fractal Design or SilentiumPC - whatever, would be reported just fine.
So my suggestion would be a fan incompatibility, not a malfunction. Though of course I could be wrong.
