Hi,

I have a problem with S3 sleep on my MAG X870E TOMAHAWK WIFI.
Sometimes, when I select Sleep in Windows 11, the display turns off but the PC does not fully enter sleep mode.
The CPU fan and case fans keep spinning, and the whole system becomes unresponsive.
I cannot wake it with the keyboard, mouse, which are bluetooth connecton by the way, or power button. I have to hold the power button to force it to shut down.
This problem has happened since I first built the PC, and recently it seems to happen more often.

My system:
- Motherboard: MSI MAG X870E TOMAHAWK WIFI
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9900X
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
- SSD: Crucial T700 PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD
- OS: Windows 11 Pro 25H2, Build 26200.8875
- BIOS: 2.AC3
- AMD chipset driver: 8.05.04.516

What I have already tried:
- Updated the BIOS from 2.A80 to 2.AC3
- Updated the AMD chipset driver
- Confirmed with powercfg /a that S3 is available
- Checked the System Power Report
- Checked for nvlddmkm errors
- Checked C:\Windows\LiveKernelReports

The BIOS update and chipset driver update did not fix the issue.
The System Power Report shows that Windows starts a standby session, but there is no normal resume event. After that, it only records an abnormal shutdown because I had to force the PC off.
I also found no nvlddmkm errors and no GPU or watchdog dump files.
The motherboard display shows a number around 75 to 80 while the PC is stuck. I think this is the CPU temperature, not a POST code.
I have already submitted a support ticket to MSI.
Has anyone had the same problem with this motherboard or another MSI X870 or X870E motherboard?
Could this be related to S3, ACPI, PCIe power management, the M2_1 slot, the Gen5 NVMe SSD, the RTX 50 series, Hyper-V, or the motherboard itself?
Any advice or information about a known issue or test BIOS would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I found a very similar report involving another MSI X870E board using the same 7E59 BIOS family:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?...leep-with-code-00-with-bios-7e59v1a92.419784/
In that case, S3 wake worked with BIOS 7E59v1A61, failed with 7E59v1A91 and 7E59v1A92, and worked again after rolling back to 7E59v1A82.
Disabling EXPO and changing Memory Context Restore or Power Down Mode did not fix it.
My issue is not exactly identical because my motherboard display shows the CPU temperature rather than code 00, but both systems become completely unresponsive during an S3 sleep cycle and require a forced shutdown or reset.

This makes me wonder whether there is an S3 regression in the newer AGESA or BIOS code used on MSI X870E motherboards.

I got the answer from MSI support Center and I did it.

They said :
1) Have you done any Special settings in bios or OS?
2) Please unplug the power supply and CMOS battery for a while.
3) Please contact the graphics card manufacturer to check if the latest driver or firmware can be updated.
4)Update all drivers to the latest version.
5) Please just install one piece of RAM to test again. You can test the graphics card and ram with some software for a try.
6) Please unplug the power-cord and check the cpu, is there any CPU pin bending or fracture?
7) If you have other spare, you can install a clean OS to check again.
8) Please check if your chassis cable is normal. We suggest that you unplug the chassis cable and remove the motherboard from the chassis to double check it. Thank you!

I implemented that I cleared CMOS using the Clear CMOS button on the motherboard. The system booted normally afterwards. I confirmed that the memory profile is set to Standard. I will monitor whether the S3 sleep issue occurs again.

I cleared CMOS using the Clear CMOS button and confirmed that Windows booted normally. Unfortunately, the same S3 sleep issue occurred again shortly afterwards. CMOS reset did not resolve the problem. I will proceed with the GPU driver and firmware checks as instructed.

Updated the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti driver from version 591.86 to 617.14. Confirmed that the new driver was successfully installed. The GPU VBIOS remains unchanged at version 98.03.58.00.85.

The S3 sleep issue had already occurred again after clearing CMOS. I will now monitor whether the issue persists with the updated NVIDIA driver. No other BIOS settings or hardware configurations were changed during this step.

Troubleshooting Log – S3 Sleep Issue Reoccurred (September 27, 2026)
The S3 sleep issue occurred again after updating the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti driver from version 591.86 to 617.14.
The system again became unresponsive during the sleep transition and required a forced shutdown.
This means that updating the NVIDIA graphics driver did not resolve the issue.
No other BIOS settings or hardware configurations were changed during this test.

Troubleshooting Log – Single RAM Module Test
Removed one of the two DDR5 memory modules and left only one 32 GB module installed in the A2 slot, following MSI’s recommended single-DIMM configuration.
The system now has 32 GB of RAM installed instead of 64 GB.
No other BIOS settings or hardware configurations were changed during this step.
I will monitor whether the S3 sleep issue occurs again with only one RAM module installed.
