I recently rebuilt a system with the MAG Z690 Tomahawk WiFi. Now I have a strange and annoying issue.
The system:
MAG Z690 Tomahawk WiFi (MS-7D32)
Intel 12th Gen Core i7-12700K
32 GB Corsair DDR4/5 (2x16gb)
Western Digital Black SN850x 1TB M.2 NVME in slot 1 (CPU)
I have two other 1TB SATA spinning hard drives installed, but the M.2 SSD is the boot/system drive.
For now, I'm using the integrated Intel UHD 770 graphics and Realtek USB audio.
The system is networked with Ethernet, so WiFi is disabled, although I left Bluetooth enabled.
I continued to run Windows 10 for a couple of weeks after the rebuild, then upgraded to Windows 11. Now running build 22H2.
All drivers, Windows updates, BIOS, etc. are the latest available.
Here is the issue: When the machine goes into lock screen (whether by timing or if I manually lock), within 1 minute of the screen going dark, I start getting Windows notification sounds. I have verified that the sounds are the Windows "device connect" and "device disconnect" notifications sounds -- the same sounds as heard if I plug in or unplug a USB device, but nothing is being connected or disconnected. The sounds chime at random every few to several seconds, and it is always only those two notification sounds. I have checked my power settings, and Windows should not be turning any devices off to save power.
My normally-connected USB devices are a scanner, WD Passport drive, Wireless mouse, keyboard, and UPS. I have disconnected each of these devices, but the sounds persist.
I have the same build of Windows 11 running on a laptop and another PC, and neither exhibits this behavior, so I have to assume that it's related to the motherboard or chipset.
I did not notice this behavior before upgrading to Windows 11, although it's entirely possible that I just wasn't paying attention during that short time.
Since this only happens when the screen is locked, it's impossible to monitor what's happening behind the scenes. There is nothing unusual in Windows' Events logs.
The only way to prevent this annoying issue was to turn off Windows sounds for the device connect/disconnect events.
Does anybody have any thoughts about what might be going on here?
I would love to solve this one, but so far I have not found any solutions, and I'm not sure where to look next.
