MEG B550 UNIFY-X would not upgrade in place

Old motherboard needed upgrading, so I got new stuff to put in my case:
--- MEG B550 UNIFY-X, Ryzen 9 5950X and G. Skill RipJaws DDR4-32000 16GBx2, all from NewEgg.
Upgrade was not smooth. By the time I got it to run, I had done a format of the SSD and installed W10 fresh from a USB drive. There was no getting past the unhandled thread exception msg during boot up that I could find.
This MB has large cooling features on it that occlude with the Cosair CPU water cooler in the case, so that isn't mounted properly anymore. Managed to mount the cooler off-center at an angle with 5 of 8 mounting screws installed. Wouldn't have thought this big old case wouldn't have enough room in it. I've decided there were probably better values for the purchase, but
It's working now and seems to be running good. Hope it lasts as long as the last one.

Wether or not an old Windows installation boots with a new system depends on several factors that are not always obvious. As a rule of thumb, the more similar your old system is to your new one in terms of chipset/platform, BIOS settings and so on, the more of a chance that Windows will boot with the new one.

However, a clean install is always your best bet, as Windows will set many internal variables according to the hardware it detects during installation. You cannot repeat this process, and if you skip it, there's a chance that something isn't quite working as it should later. You could have weird little issues and you might never fully get to the bottom of them.
