MEG Z490 Unify: Frozr Heatsink Fan won't adjust speed to fan curve

Hi everyone,

I recently bought and installed a Z490 Unify in a new build. Everything seems to be working fine, with one exception - the Frozr Heatsink Fan.

Currently, the fan is stuck on 11Krpm, even with the "Silenced" or "Manual" curves set in the BIOS. This makes my otherwise whisper quiet build very, very noisy - even with the CPU at 3-4%, as the fan never adjusts its speed to match the temperature.

I have tried the following:
  • Adjusting the fan curves in the BIOS (all other fan curves work correctly, only MOS does not)
  • Turned off all other fans, including the AIO cooler (these can all be controlled either from BIOS or associated software)
  • Flashing the BIOS down to release A10
  • Flashing the BIOS up to release A20
  • Using "FanControl" software (recognises VRM MOS temperature, but not the fan itself) under Windows 10
Attached is a screenshot of my BIOS screen showing how the temperature is well below the threshold for fan activity (30C vs. 75C), but the fan speed is clearly showing as 10-11K. Since there is no fan header available for this fan (it lives inside the heatsync), I cannot just disconnect it (nor would I want to, as I assume it helps to cool the components around the CPU).

My suspicion is that the problem is either one of two things:
  • A bug in the BIOS software; or
  • A faulty fan controller on the motherboard
Grateful for any help or advice you can offer to help me get this fan to obey the fan curve.

Thanks in advance.

Lots of views. No clues.

Turns out it's likely to be an RMA. Very disappointed in MSI's QC. This is going to cost me hours of my time, and weeks of waiting for a DOA board. Not happy.

I got the same problem. Bought the MEG Z490 Unify on black friday, received it one week later, and now the stupid MOS fan is running at 11000 RPM :(

At the very least, we should be able to disable the fan completely in UEFI (BIOS) and choose when to RMA it. But this noise is intollerable. Had it less than one month and it fails. Truth be told, I had no idea that there was a MOS fan at all. I really wish MSI had a better support system where they would send out a new motherboard and then you would have to return the old one with the same delivery. My retailer is out of stock, likely will just give me a credit for the faulty one, and then I will have to buy it again at a price that is 100 dollar more expensive than what I paid originally.
