MFlash Crash

So, I have an MSI X370 Pro Carbon MB and a Ryzen 7 1700x. I've updated the BIOS every time a new release was posted with no issues. However, this time, for some reason, when I boot into the BIOS, select MFlash, it asks to reboot into flash mode, which I do, it reboots, then says entering flash mode, then black screen, and that's it. I also noticed my numlock no longer works, so I'm guessing the PC is crashing. This is the first time I've ever had this happen. I tried several times to no avail. I pulled the CMOS battery for about 10 minutes then put it back. Booted into BIOS, selected MFlash, rebooted into flash mode, black screen. I contacted support, and the genuis there just sent me a link on how to use MFlash to update the BIOS.

Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this, or possibly a workaround? I was just going to drop in a 5700X and just hold off a couple years before completely redoing my system, but if I can't get this board to flash, might have to consider alternatives. Probably go with a different brand after dealing with MSI support.

So what bios version are you on and can you still get into windows normally?

Once it goes to the black screen, I can turn off the PC, turn it on, it'll get to the point of POST, reboot exiting flash mode, then boot into the BIOS, where i can exit, and boot into Windows normally. My system runs fine. It's just for some reason, MFlash will freeze when booting into flash mode, and thus I can't update the BIOS.

It sounds like it didn't flash correctly last time. Personally I'd weigh up risk options, leave it or update it. It could fail completely either way.

Have you tried to boot without the USB with the Bios file on in plugged in to the USB port

In the past, whenever I updated the BIOS, I just used MFlash and had the file stored on a USB hard drive. Worked lfawlessly that way. From further reading, it appears that for some people, the previous BIOS updates recently released are bugged, and are causing others the same issue I'm having. The other poster provided a riskey alternative. I'm thinking it over. As a measure, I did try unpluggin all USB devices when trying to enter Flash Mode, but it made no difference.

I remember seeing people said some monitors might have this kind of problem, did you change your monitor as well? Have you tried with different HDMI/DP port or maybe lower the refresh rate of your monitor to 60Hz or below?

Well, considering I've never had this problem before, and I have had the same monitor/system since I built it 5 years ago, and have updated the BIIOS upon every new release, I didn't see that as being a possibility. However, I did switch from DP to HDMI, and that made no difference. I appreciate the suggestion though. Ultimately, I decided to just go with a 3800x rather than a 5800x. That should do me for a while, and I can consider building a new/second system after the new releases coming at the end of the year. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and assistance.

Update:

Well, I said screw it and did hte altnerative method and briched my mobo. So, I ended up getting an Asus B550-F Gaming mobo and a Ryzen 7 5800X. Everything is running good.

However:

i tried updating my son's B350 Tomahawk tonight so he could upgrade his CPU. The MFlash tool worked fine, recognized the new BIOS file, updated it, rebooted, and nothing. So, even when you do it the right way, it still doesn't work apprently. I think it's safe to say at this point that this new BIOS update to support Ryzen 5000 series CPUs is a bust.

What CPU does he have? The latest BIOS 7A34v1Q6 removed support for AMD Bristol Ridge series APU.

Yeah I saw that. He has a Ryzen 5 1600. Since nothing was said about it, I assumed it would still be supported after the update. Just for grins and giggles, I pulled the CMOS battery for a few minutes, then put it back and turned on the PC, still nothing. So, looks like another mobo bricked unless anybody has any other ideas.

Yes it is.

Does CPU debug LED stay on?
I'm thinking that was just bad luck and indeed there's always a very slim chance that BIOS update might brick the board.
Now you either RMA your board or flash BIOS via special programmer.
