Hi, I need to upgrade my disk size, and I'm looking at SSD Samsung 970 EVO 500GB M.2 PCIe 3.0 NVMe.
Is this SSD compatible with motherboard MSI H97M-G43 and what speed W/R can I expect? My current SSD is connected with M.2 port, is it better to connect it through PCIe 3.0 x16 with AHCI SSD Adapter Card?
Thank you for your answers.

Hi! I have the same motherboard and the same "problem". I've found that this M.2 of h97 and z97 chipset uses 2 lanes only of pci express. These chipsets support pci 3.0 BUT they are 2.0 and limited to 2.0 throughput. It means that each lane of PCI 2.0 has 500mb/s limit, so our M.2 limit is 1000m/s and it is not enough to a 3000m/s samsung evo 960 or 970. Even if it was PCI 3.0 would not be enough, because we would be limited by +- 1000m/s per lane or 2000m/s ... see, not enough to our evo 970 that needs at least 4 lanes of PCI 3.0 (a real 3.0 not our case).
Probably you will have to buy a PCI adapter that uses 8 lanes (8 x 500m/s = 4000m/s) to be enough to evo samsung 960 or 970.
BUT... according to intel we have only 8 lanes, so it could interfere on your video card tasks if you use a lot for games or rendering for example.
I would not try it, unless you not use video card or not so much... is ssd speed more important to your tasks?

Resuming: no, M.2 of MSI h97 G43 will not support any SSD that needs more than 1Gb/s (1000m/s). If you do not use video card or at least not use too much or use a little GPU like quadro k420, go ahead and put a 16x PCI adapter on the blue PCI slot because you will need all the 8 lanes.

For me it's the end of line, i will continue using ssd samsung evo's on sata ports. Hope it helped you, because the MSI and other manufacturers informations are always lack of details.
