Hey everyone,

I have recently built a PC with a MPG Carbon WIFI Intel Z790 DDR5 board that boots rather slowly, compared to a second PC I have with a similar configuration. Let me explain:

Second (slightly older PC):
MSI MPG Edge WIFI Intel Z690 So.1700 DDR5
Intel Core i7 13700K
32GB (2x 16GB) Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 DIMM CL36-36-36-76
12GB Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Gaming OC
1TB Kingston KC3000 M.2 PCIe 4.0
1000 Watt be quiet! Pure Power 12 M

This PC boots up almost instantly. In just over 10 seconds from pressing the power button, I'm in Windows. I used this PC for general purpose and gaming, but now I want to use it mainly for music production, which is why I bought a new PC without a dedicated GPU and just switched the 4070Ti from the older PC to the new one.

Now this is the new PC:
MSI MPG Carbon WIFI Intel Z790 So.1700 DDR5
Intel Core i7 14700K
32GB (2x 16GB) Corsair Vengeance DDR5-6000 DIMM CL30
12GB Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Gaming OC
1TB Kingston KC3000 M.2 PCIe 4.0
1000 Watt be quiet! Pure Power 12 M

This PC boots up comparatively slowly. it takes over 40 seeconds from pressing the power butoon until I'm in Windows. As you can see the configuration is very similar. The Ram is slightly different (CL30 vs CL36), the CPU is better and of course the motherboard is different. The BIOS settings of the two boards are also identical (I've also tried stock settings of course).

Further information:
The "Last BIOS time" in Windows Task manager shows round about 9 seconds on BOTH PCs. However, on the newer PC with the z790, the boot process remains much longer on the motherboard bootlogo with the while circle scrolling than the older PC with the z690.

Does anyone know what the issue might be? From researching I found quite a lot of people with slow boot times on this board. However, I find it hard to believe that the z790 is so much slower to boot than the z690.

Any help is appreciated!

Hey, I fixed my issue today, turns out one of my External Drives that I have connected was causing the issue, despite the BOOT ORDER having these types of device disabled.
Might may to check and remove all USB devices and try bootup and see if it goes faster.
Well, it didn't fix it for me sadly. I know that if I have external drives connected, the boot time will be even longer. The more drives, the longer it gets. If I have my 2 Backup drives connected, my boot time will be around 50 seconds to login. With no drives still around 30-40 seconds. So it's not fixed. My old PC with the z690 boots in 10-15 seconds even WITH an external drive connected.

Specifically, in the z790 carbon wifi, the fast boot parameters are mixed up. To get a fast boot, simply disable fast boot. Everything works as expected on the z690 tomahawk and z790 tomahawk max. On carbon, the value does not correspond to the actual one.

What?! I'll have to try this later. This is crazy if true. In the BIOS there are TWO fast boot options: regular fast boot and MSI fastboot. I have MSI fastboot enabled, which automatically disables the other fast boot option.

So are you saying that BOTH fast boot options should be disabled for fast boot to actually work? Can you please confirm?

EDIT:

I just tried it (both MSI Fast Boot and regular Fast Boot disabled). Sounded too good to be true, so I had to try it. Unfortunately, it did nothing for my system. In fact, the boot time got 4 seconds longer, from 34 seconds to 38 seconds.

Then I re-enabled MSI fast Boot again and something weird happened. I got a 26 second boot (still much slower than my older PC, but 8 seconds faster than usual). However, once I switched the system off and botted again, I was back to 34-35 seconds. So, yeah, problem not solved.

Did you ever find a solution to this?

I recently upgraded my motherboard from the MPG Z790 Carbon Wi-Fi to the MPG Z790 Carbon Max Wi-Fi 2, and ever since the installation, my boot time has been extremely slow. My previous board booted into Windows in just 10 seconds, but now it takes nearly 2 minutes to reach the desktop.

I’ve tried adjusting various BIOS settings, but nothing seems to work. I have no idea what’s causing the delay—any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Nope, I haven't found any solution. It seems like this board just has very bad boot times. I've since made my peace with it, but to be honest, it still sucks. My old board also booted super fast and despite this technically being an upgrade, it FEELS like a major downgrade.

Although 2 minutes is much more than what I have. I am at roughly 40 seconds to windows log on screen.
