Hello. I hope someone can help. I built my system a week ago and other then this issue rearing its head everything has been working very well indeed.

I find that on every second or third boot into Windows 11 my M2_2 NVME, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB is not detected. The primary M2_1, Samsung 980 Pro 1TB containing the OS, is always detected fine. I tried booting into the bios 5 times last night and the 990 Pro always shows, possibly ruling out a slot connectivity issue?

I'm more inclined in believing this is a BIOS bug or a problem with the 990 Pro SSD.

And yet I have all M.2 fully populated as well as all SATA with no problems with detection at all.
And is mostly Samsung drives or WD drives that do it

Hi!
This is a known issue with the 2d SSD slot.
I had the same issue, described it there:https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threads/a-new-mpg-x670e-carbon-wifi.386572/post-2195402

Switch the slot to 3 or 4 fixed the issue.
As I understand, this is a BIOS issue, I'm currently on 176 version of bios, and I have no idea they fixed it or not in the latest versions of bios
Yeah, unfortunately I'm using all 4 slots. It was not fixed on their 7D70v1B1 version but I have yet to try the latest 7D70v1B, although I doubt it is fixed.

That's interesting. It's not a drive failure for me since they aren't new drives so maybe it's some weird incompatibility between those particular drives and the board (2 990s working on other machines have this issue in the m2_2 slot, I also have 2 960s but untested)

This is 100% not a disk issue.
Because it works great with other motherboards, even MSI.

Just wanted to chime in and report that I've got the exact same issue with a X670E Carbon with a 7950X3D, 64 GB DDR5 RAM (6000 at 6000 with EXPO) and RTX 3070 Ti.

- SATA 870 EVO SSD (SATA_P1)
- 980 PRO M2 (M2_1)
- 990 PRO M2 (M2_2)

Every second to third boot, the 990 PRO in the M2_2 slot is simply not reported as existing at all by the system. Rebooting eventually fixes the issue and once the M2 is recognized, it works perfectly fine and well within its limits. The system is otherwise stable and performs without any issues. I've re-seated the M2 multiple times and doubt that this is a problem with the M2 (it works without any issues in other systems). I've recently updated the UEFI to 7D70v1B but the problem remains. Rebooting still eventually 'makes it appear'.

Before you try it, I've already tried replacing the MOBO to no avail and wasted a good 4 hours putting everything back together. Near identical setup. For you, I'd recommend just putting your 990 in the m2_3 slot since it doesn't seem to be populated.

Same ish computer though except more drives and a 4090.
P1 some WD 1tb drive
P2 some WD 8tb drive
M2_1 990
M2_2 990
M2_3 960
M2_4 960

Thanks, I might have to do that. My setup is physically a bit more involved so doing something like that, that's usually a quick thing, always takes a bit of time.

BTW (take this with a huge grain of salt, I've never exactly counted or measured the amount of times where the M2 failed to detect): I think that with the recent UEFI Update 7D70v1B the situation in fact worsened. Occasionally, it now takes me 5-6 boots to get the M2 to be detected. Additionally, putting the PC in sleep mode also makes the M2 disappear after waking it up again.

This is a really really annoying situation.

In my case, most things point to a hardware fault with my motherboard but I thought I might as well add my experience if it helps in any way.

My M2_2 slot has been 100% stable and is always recognised but is only running at PCIe 4.0 x2. Swapping my M.2_1 and M.2_2 drives makes no difference, the second slot always runs at x2 no matter the drive. Reinstalling Windows on another drive or running it off of either M.2_2 or M.2_1 makes no difference.

BIOS version 7D70v18 (I'll upgrade to the newest BIOS in the near future but I doubt it'll help my specific problem)

I have the exact same issue and the exact same parts as the person started this tread. X670e carbon and Samsung 990 pro in M2_2 slot
I tried changing the slot to pci 4 as many have but the problem is identical. After a cold boot it may or may not show up, if not I need to restart the system (and sometimes a few times) before the drive show up again.

i built my system during this summer and I used an older bios back then. I had no issues with the drive but I needed to update my bios because expo was bugged. Ever since this issue with the drive has been here and it’s starting to get really annoying. It’s a premium board we purchased and it’s expected things like this would be fixed ASAP. Given so many people here with the same parts and have the same issue with the exact same behavior this is something MSI can easily recreate in their labs. This needs more attention I feel like so we can finally get a fix. I Love MSI, good engineers over there. But I’m starting to get tired..

In 18 years of building PCs, I have never experienced anything like this. I'm sticking with ASUS, there have been one or two problems with the boards in the past, but they were usually resolved quickly. The MSI X670E Carbon is a motherboard in the upper price range. I demand that everything runs error-free and if an error occurs that can clearly be traced back to the board/bios, it is resolved quickly. The board has been on the market for over a year and still has massive problems.
What are the manufacturers doing? Don't feel anything!
We're talking about standard M.2 SSDs here, nothing exotic. The Samsung 990Pro or the WD BLACK SN850X are the most popular and best-selling SSDs. There cannot and should not be such compatibility problems. We have Win10/11 in 2023 and not Windows 3.1 in 1992...
Do MSI employees read this forum? Then I don't understand why so little is being done.

Took me a whooping 9 reboots this morning to get my M2 recognized. I can see that there are multiple threads where this issue is being reported. Has there in any of them ever been an official MSI response to the issue?

Well, it looks like there is a firmware update available for the 990 Pro (old version: 3B2QJXD7, new version: 4B2QJXD7). I'll give this a try as soon as possible and see whether this helps with the issue.

Thanks, looking forward to hear from your experience with it! This issue has been eating me up lately

Btw where did you see this firmware? I can’t find it in Samsung Magician
